New TL gas Milage?

I got only 20mpg for mostly highway miles. I couldn't believe the break-in period makes such a big difference since the spec says it should be 19/29.

Something has got to be wrong -- only 20mpg? My TL-S has 8000 miles on it and recently, I purposely ran the car in a spirited manner for me. For one full tank, I always took off fast, drove in bad LA (405 Fwy LB-Marina Del Rey) traffic and did hard passing whenever I could. I still managed over 23mpg. The following 2 tanks of gas I was on a road trip to Las Vegas -- all highway with very little traffic, air conditioning on almost the entire time -- I managed about 31mpg for the entire trip.

I don't know what you guys are doing to be getting these horrible mileage numbers that you are posting here. I keep meticulous records of gas mileage and am averaging over 25mpg, mostly LA traffic miles. I can't imagine how some of you are getting under 20mpg -- I mean, I purposely tried NOT getting good mileage and I still got 23mpg. I admit that my "spirited" driving is probably not that wild (I am older than most of the members here), but you guys must be driving like complete maniacs.

20 mpg?

gainful, i have 20k on my tl-p and yesterday, took a trip to annapolis md, from philly with 4 other ppl in the with the ac kicking. i got 313 miles on 11 gallons. about 28 mpg. i have been keeping track of mpg like pauli and found that i get about 24 mpg city/hwy and about 22 if i am in the city alot. i kinda notice that i get a little be mileage using Hess gas but i think it's just me. stop signs at every intersection in philly doesn't help either.

Ok, my 99 does 14mpg street and 19mpg (!) freeway .. i had the car fully checked by the dealer under warrenty, no problems found, computers were reset, injection was checked, etc .. they blame it on A/C use (i live in LA, summers are HOT) and the was the car was broken in by the previous owner.

My '99 gets 14-15 mpg in the city, 22-25 on the highway. I use the A/C *ALL* the time and my car is blk/blk (w/ tints).

i have 500 miles on my TL and have averaged about 20 mpg. Does the break in period have that much affect on the milage? If so, what are some of your experiences after? Should I expect a healthy improvement?

The gas mileage will increase over the first 5-10k miles. In 50/50 suburban/freeway I average 24 mpg..

My mileage improved after the first oil change--could have been the oil change or the tires being the right inflation, etc.

If your car is new, you should see better miles right after the first oil change. My car is around 51,000 and I get 27-29 miles HWY and 22-24 miles city. I have IK20 plugs, K&N highflow filter, fuel system cleaner whenever its due, and on time oil changes. How did you calc the mpg? When the fuel light comes on, you still have about 4.2 gallons in your 17.2 gallons cap tank. So you should divide (your milages)/13 gallons and not 17.2. If thats how you calc it. Best way to keep track of mileage is that you should reset your trip monitor everytime you fill up and print out a recipet that has how much gallons you put in. Thats pretty accurate.

Ouch, I'm seeing a wide variety of MPG here. My TL (1st gen 3.2) gets 20 city, 26 highway (I'm a little heavy on the pedal too) even though its rated 19/24. My Dad just bought an '03 TL and gets 31 mpg. Both of us use 92/93 octane, stock wheels and tires and use 0w-20 Mobil 1 Honda oil.

My car has 500 miles on it too, and I have been hearing a grinding noise from day one. It sounds like a shaft or brake touching.

It probably contribute the my so-so gas milage. ANyone has expereince with defective new car?
