new member oil recommendation

hi all new member and new owner of a 03 black TL-s with nav. I want to put mobil one in it, but I noticed they recommend 5W-20. That weight seems a little low, anyone use anything else?

Also besides the transmission issue anything else i should look out for?

Thanks!

I have been using the Mobil 1 0w-20. It says on the bottle recommended for Honda vehicles requiring 5w-20. You should use one of these two..

Someone else had a recent thread about common issues with the TL. Tranny obviously the biggie

I have been using 5w-30. Runs very smooth and Mobil 1 is always easy to find. Using 5w-30 won't harm anything and will give you better protection from high temperatures.

You're in Texas ... use a thicker oil (Mobil1 5W-30) -- you'll be fine. You'll get better protection with the thicker oil. You might see a marginal decrease in fuel economy ... MAYBE.

If you want to use synthetic, there are other choices. Some swear by Amsoil, Royal Purple, Amsoil, to name a few.

Derrick's right. If you're in the warm climate area, then use the thicker alternative instead of the 0w20.

I use 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer in Michigan.

Wow -- 10w30 in the summer in Michigan?! No wonder you have crappy fuel economy. LOL -- j/k -- that's good if you go to the track a lot.

I am seriously gonna look at every 12,000km (synthetic 5W30) oil changes now. Screw the every 6000km (conventional oil) as they say in the manual. Hell -- my car's off warranty now ...

I run my car HARD. If I were my car, I would slap me in the nuts.

As much as I take care of her, I beat the crap out of her. That's why I run 10w30 in the summer. But I may switch to Royal Purple 5w20 soon and see if I notice any improvements.

Thanks for all the input. Do the guys running the 0W-30 or 5W-30 feel any reduction in power? I read somewhere that increasing the weight can suck the power out of the car? The power of the TL is one of the main things that sold me on it.

Heavy weight will increase friction in the engine, and it could decrease the power. However, it won't be much at all.

oil

I live in Texas also! I have used Royal Purple 5W-30 for several years now, and I love the stuff (not saying it's any better). I also use Royal Purple 20W50 in my 2002 Goldwing, and find it to be wonderful for the oil bath clutch.

i run 5w30 in the winter and 10w30 in the summer. the car recomends 5w30. 0 weight is too thin for me and my driving. ive never felt any reduction in power or seen a reduction in mileage using 10w VS 5w

Im in houston and I run Castrol Syntec 5W30 all year round. I like the thicker looking oil vs Mobil1

Mobil1 seems to be cleaner and clear looking, but it also looks real thin. My old integra burned almost a quart between changes using mobil1..

oil numbers

Guys,
W means winter and not weight. First number before W it's about the viscosity at low temperatures accordind the SAE classification. So nothing to do about the thickness in normal functionning. The second number its about the viscosity and stability at high temperatures. Acura specifies min 30. Higher is better and you can found it in synthetic oils.
So during winter go for 0w-30 or 5w-30 and in summer 5W-30 or -40 even -50. Going up during summer with 10W or 15W do nothing but empeach (I exagerate) the rapid increase of pressure in your system oil, taking into account the tight clearances of Acura motors.
To conclude use synthetic and respect the specifications.
Hope its much clear.
