the law is it's all good until you get caught. i've seen people with license plates almost blacked out, but good luck passing inspection with it.

i'm not quite sure what the law is as far as a ticketable offense from a cop.

do these actually work for deterring radar??

covering the plate with anything is illegal in every state. You can usually get away with clear covers, however, smoked covers are a lot easier to spot.

Like agean said.... you'll be OK for a while.. but all you need is one cop looking for offenses and you'll be a target. I've had clear covers on my CL and now my TL and never had a problem with them. Once I was asked about them and I just said I like my plates to be clean... like my car is!!

You can be sure if you have EZPass they will ticket you for having smoked plates. The need to be able to see your plate to verify the EZPass transponder is registered with that car.

Speaking of clear plates - I got a ticket in Park Ridge (where I work) at a traffic stop for a plate cover. The plate was perfectly clear and the cop said that it was illegal - I was about to put my foot up his ass. His reason was that it made the plate harder to see - need to fill the quota that bad, eh? The problem was that it is a state offense, so there is no way a judge will take your word over the cop (offense is printed on the ticket). The funny part was the fact that I have 20% tint all around and he barely mentioned it. But they nailed me with the plate cover. Haven't gotten pulled over since.

The cops had two officers on each side of the road checking for things like inspection stickers, no front plates... They also had a truck for testing emissions in a parking lot on the side - I saw three brand new cars (with temporary stickers) being tested for emissions. A screw job if you ask me.

nsxnext...are you sure thats true? my dad switched his ez pass to a new car, and they only nailed him on it when they claimed he "didnt pay a toll" about 4 months later. i know they don't allow u to switch the ezpass between cars, but i dont think they check it every time you pass through

Well then how would they know you switched EZPass tags if they don't check every time?

the reason my dad got caught is that he went through with a zero balance on his account, they took a pic of his plate as evidence, and they then realized that the ezpass transponder didn't match up to his plate.

its all bu@#sh%$t anyway, whats the big deal if you switch from car to car, its the same amount of toll anyway...

I dont think that is true about EZ-Pass, I switch my tag between cars all the time and never have a problem. Come to think of it, I never even told EZ-Pass that I got a new car. So neither car that I have is registered with EZ-Pass.

They spot check the EZPass stuff. I've been using the EZPass from my old car until my tags came in the mail (purchased out of state), never got a notice for over a month. My friend's mom switched it and got nailed the one time she switched. Another friend used to blow by the EZPass lanes when traffic is really bad and still never got a ticket. It's a hit or miss thing I suppose.

Personally, I agree with the law that smoked plate covers shouldn't be permitted. Had a friend who was involved in a hit and run. The guy had smoked plate covers, so they could never locate him. Since then, I've always had a grudge against people who virtually black out their plates...

Smoked and clear covers are all illegal. Clears are illegal because light reflecting off the cover will block vision of the plate.

I have clear cover with some sort of blury material over the license number. Its for photos. If you off to the side or up above you could only see part of the number. But if you look at it directly in front it looks perfect. Knock on wood I haven't gotten pulled over yet.
