cleaned the entire system thru the manifold--or just poked at the port under the valve?

if you are removing the egr valve and only poking thru the hole right under it,,
thats a start
but not getting the actual problem of where and what clogs and causes the code
you must remove the intake manifold from the top of the engine and set on workbench.
Use ~3 cans carb cleaner (or solvent tank if available) to soften the crud built up inside the length of the passage thru the manifold to the cyl(s)
99 has 1 port, later have 6,,,get everything!
use a wire coat hanger or similar wire to poke thru from one end to the other
see diy for more but if you are not doing that- its your likely problem
do it right and its good for another 75kmiles
average noob diy 1.5 to 2 hours at a casual careful pace

Has the OP ever come back to this thread or any thread?
or were they just some freak who goes around joining groups to cause problems?

3.2 we are not talking about the hole under the egr valve
do you understand that hole goes to a long passage inside the manifold-- and thru to the other end of manifold-- where even more will be concentrated!! (see many pics of manifold)
along with that are the individual port/holes for each cyl
if you have not taken the manifold off the engine,,,you have not even gotten close to the problem
blocking off the egr is for race vehicles..no need to do it on our car and probably a few complications with smog system from doing it

Well, the first time I did the cleaning of the EGR port was because I got a check engine light which said something about EGR. My mechanic took off a large piece thats under the engine cover (One side connects the air intake which had to be removed as well as throttle cables and stuff in that area; also very noticeable are the 6 raised passages so air goes to all cylinders; located on the underside of this whole metal piece is the EGR port; does this sound like what your talking about 01tl4tl?). The hole was completely clogged. We used a coat hanger and alot of carb cleaner for that one. We sprayed the EGR port with carb cleaner and eventually came out some other holes; then we let it dry.
about 3 months ago we did the same thing but it was not bad compared to the first time we did this.
Does this sound like the procedure your talking about 01tl4tl?

ck the diy to be sure of pics vs your description- sounds like on the right track but maybe not getting it done all the way?
