Neutral: Does it save gas? Bad for tranny?

Does anyone pop it up into neutral when like braking hard or aproaching a red light? I was once told that braking hard takes almost as much gas as accelerating due to automatic trannys engines assist you in stoping the car. Would that really save gas similar to a manual tranny. I would imagine its buting wear on the tranny all of the neutral to drive at lights all of the time.

it doesn't save enough gas to matter
and no, it won't hurt your tranny to do that, makes it a bit easier to stop the car though
