Need some help please
Kind of stuck here. I can't figure out what is busted and causing the grinding noise. Before you ask- passenger side noise. New pads and calipers. Took em off today because I though maybe pads were hung up. Found instead- my rotor backing plate is loose behin the axle nut. I didn't have an axle nut socket but whatever is behind the plate that holds the lugs is broken and loose. Any help would be awesome!

I think it's either the axle or what the axle connects into. If I hold the axle still an turn it the rotor turns with it but if I grab rotor it flops all over the place

Are you saying #5 is loose and wobbling around? #5 gets pressed into the bearing #4. The axle goes thru and into #5. If its loose and wobbling around either the bearing has failed drastically or the axle is broken. Either way i would NOT drive it till you get it fixed.

So, you indicate that the drive-axle is still tight and without play within the wheel hub, that's a good sign that your axle may be ok. This leads one to believe that the flop and slop must be a really bad bearing.
I'm surprised that you had not noticed any vibrations while driving, along with the tell-tale humming sound of a worn bearing. Perhaps the bad rotor/pads drowned it out !
A press would be very helpful in removing the old bearing. Inspect the knuckle and hub closely for any damage. It would'nt hurt to double check the drive-shafts also.
