Unhappy Need help... Unwanted shock sensor side effect

Ok, I just installed a shock sensor per novawhitetypes's instructions.

BUT, I have a big unwanted side effect. Any time the sensor is tripped (the led lights up on the sensor) my Navi screen turns a yellowish color for just a second. It doesn't trip the alarm, but this happens while I am driving around.

Pics of my install are here: http://gallery.thewebworks.com/album06

Does anybody see something wrong? Are there others out there with a NAV who have installed the sensor?

Is it possible the 'U' socket on the back of the fuse box is connected to the NAV? Could the sensor be causing an amp spike that is interfering with the NAV.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Wink

Current drain from a shock sensor should be so minimal that no noticeable voltage spike should occur. Double check your "trigger" wire connection. Disconnect it and see if your navi still acts up whenever the shock sensor is tripped.

If it still acts up, find another +12v power source or make a better ground connection. If it no longer acts up, then make sure you are connecting your "trigger" wire to the proper wire.

If this still doesn't work, try another shock sensor. Yours might have a serious defect.

What brand of sensor are you using?

It is the DEI from BestBuy... It does trip the alarm.

I tried moving the ground wire to a better connection and I still get that yellow color on the NAV when it trips. I am thinking I need to shorten and solder that bad boy if it is indeed the ground.

Question

Did you take my advice yet?

Really, you need to troubleshoot the device and find out what the exact problem is. You should start by disconnecting the trigger wire and seeing how it behaves.

Start with 1, and move on if the problem is not corrected.
1) Confirm the triggering wire is not causing the interference.
2) Confirm the power wires are not causing the interference.
3) Confirm that the alarm trigger wire you tap into is able to receive a negative signal without causing navi interference.
4) Replace the shock sensor

For additional testing, I would monitor the output of the shock sensor to see if it is a negative trigger device as it should be and whether the trigger outputs turn off or actually output a + voltage when the shock sensor is not detecting a shock (inactive).

I would also manually apply a ground wire to the trigger wire you are tapping into and see if the navi interference can be duplicated this way.

Welcome to the wonderful world of electrical troubleshooting. It's not that bad once you get the hang of it.

Thanx for the tips. I didn't have time at work to play too much with it. Tomorrow I'm heading outside to play with it.

Yup it was the trip wire. I disconnected it and no more yellow screen And now that I think back I don't know if my alarm was really tripped by the sensor or by me trying to open the door from inside while the alarm was alarmed. I think I may be at a loss, there are too many solid yellow wires back there. Can anyone give a more detailed description of exactly which yellow wire it is?

If I am looking at the correct bundle of wires there are two solid yellow wires, one that goes north and another that goes south. The one tht goes south as seen in this pic has e-tape wrapped around it that is seen after pulling back some of the tape surrounding the whole bundle. The one that goes north activates the led on the memory seat position #2 on the door. There are also a yellow with white stripe, and a yellow with black stripe in this same bundle. Does any of this sound right?

Is the bundle the lowest and furthest close to the drivers seat? Or is it one of the bundles further up?
