need to change bulb to h.i.d ...

i got an 02 tl-s and i wanted to change my headlight to some h.i.d . i attempted to try just now but i ran into some problems.

1. how can i get access to the bulb on the driver side. what do i need to take out.

2. i cannot remove the black cover on the passenger side. ( the one that say high voltage do not remove and blahblah)

3. to make sure the bulb size is 9005 right? cause i have a set for my integra and would like to put it on the tl.

ps. i saw the dyi thread before but for some reason i cant find it no more.. thank you

hello, welcome to the forum, your car is equipped with D2R HID system, you are already HID. so 9005 would not work in your low beam (although they might work in your fogs, not sure, i do not have stock fogs). if you want to open the casing to the HID system, you are going to need a Torx 20 bit to take out the screw, then rotate the assembly clockwise i believe and it should pop right off. do not handle the glass on your bulbs with bare hands, use latex gloves or just don't touch the bulb.

its a TORX #20 SECURITY Tip driver- or a dremel tool makes fast work of turning them into flatblade screws
Its often easier to remove the bumper cover- a few bolts and clips- then remove the entire headlight housing for access to the back
Its tricky to release and recatch the hidden safety lock wire/spring on the bulb

4300 Kelvin is stock Color temp rating, 5000 is more blue with good white and 6000 is even more blue with some loss of white on the road
5000 and 6000 do light up the special reflective stuff now in road paints, signs, the red/white decals on semi-trucks light up bright!!

Kaixen is a respected brand- vendor Excelerate carries them on acurazine
or look on the web
100 bucks is a deal for them as a pair

what do you mean right output-- the color is what changes- and your abilty to distinguish objects with it

output should be pretty close on all of them, dont have a number of lumens for that, sorry
I bought my Kaixens from Excelerate

you DONT need a hid kit for the TL low beams- it already is HID,,, with ballast, capacitor, and ignitor

yes I am on Kaixen bulbs in the low beams

8000k is way to high in the color spectrum- basically purple- you cant see squat with them
5000 is closest to stock and very good- 6000 is ok

while 1 year warranty is nice, I expect these bulbs to last 3000 hours per the makers, stock was about 2500 hours..that should be several years of all the time use

PS. should i dc the battery while changing it? .. sorrry im a noob when it come to car.

i believe the high beam is 9006, the fogs are 9005, and d2r hid is the low beams.

your hid bulbs are prob at the end of their life, you should get them replaced.

switch the drivers side and passenger side bulbs to make sure the ballast or igniter is not going bad on the hids.

i have 5k hids, they are plenty bright and i wired in a custom after market ballast and igniter because my stock ballast went kaboom!

if your looking to make your high beams hid or fogs, you will have to buy a complete hid kit and wire it in. its not hard.

PS. I can tell

When you turn your headlight switch on, you switch on your low beams which in turn our cars are HID-ready meaning we already have the HID kit installed so your set.

Your saying you want to change your HID bulbs, well you can all you need are the bulbs and you can only order through the web and not at retail outlets.

Your best bet is to buy some from this site: http://store.excelerateperformance.c.../i-236446.aspx

They provide the best replacement and they come exactly close to the stock OEM which are 4300k.

there is a member on this site that is a sponsor of this site and they are $100 for a pair. as a side note you might see the abbreviation d2c. it clearly says that d2c is compatible with d2c=d2r & d2s. so your good.

I would only suggest 4300k or 5000k anything higher your just risking light output (lumens) and gaining color (kelvin).

example chart:
4300k D2S Philips = 3200lm (lumens)
4300k D2R Philips = 2800lm (lumens)
4300k D2S Philips = 2400lm (lumens) actually 5800k
4300k D2R Philips = 2000lm (lumens) actually 5800k
4800k D4S/R (brand) = 3800 (lumens) -- brightest in the market
5800k D4S/R (brand) = 3300 (lumens)
7000k D2S other = 1790lm (lumens) *(other bulb brand)
7000k D2R other = 1390lm (lumens) *(other bulb brand)
8000k D2S other = 1180lm (lumens) *(other bulb brand)
8000k D2R other = 780lm (lumens) *(other bulb brand)

that chart above will help you out determining which kelvin you want as far as bulb is concerned and will show you what the light output will be

It's the other way around. High beams are 9005, fogs are 9006

is your stock ballast/ignitor going bad? why would you want to replace your D2R system with aftermarket otherwise?

Because it is cheaper to replace the entire system with an aftermarket HID kit than to replace an igniter here, a ballast there, bulbs, etc. I replaced one igniter for $35 but got a lucky deal off of ebay. They usually run $60-100. After a few more thousand miles I was beginning to have more headlight props so I just said screw it and replaced everything. Our sponsor has a deal on a complete kit for $54 shipped I believe. The coupon only lasts thru jan 4.
