NAVI and the Longitude/Latitude/Altitude

You know (I bet some don't), that if you press the Acura car icon on the map display (Looks like "Asteroids" to me) you get your Longitude/Latitude/Altitude and a bunch of other stuff.

Is this stuff stored on the DVD or is it actually dumped from the sat? It seems like the altitude is always odd (not making sense).
I can be in the hills and get a low altitude, and at the shore and get a high altitude. Very strange.....

Anyone ever notice this?
