Question Navi as a DVD player?

Hey, I was told by an Acura sales person that the Navi, since it's DVD based, can play DVD movies. Now this would be so cool if it were true, but some how I don't believe him. Does anyone know anything about this?

i have an aftermarket dvd based nav system (alpine) and it doesn't play dvd movies. it is a dvd-rom drive. however, with the aftermarket nav system (the alpine once again) there are two inputs so you can have movies, games, all that junk. im not sure about the factory nav system but i know mine doesnt and i wouldnt think the acuras would. we would probably be seeing it on the commercials if it did.

better yet, bring a DVD movie with you next time, hand it to him and ask him to play it for ya, haha. that would be funny to hear his response. and after you had your fun, have him fired.

Cool

It sucks that all the technology to play a DVD in the car is present, but the "wisdom" of the Acura engineers prohibits us from doing it, lest we watch a movie like "Gone In 60 Seconds" and are tempted to see if some of the racing scenes are actually feasible.

If anyone know's how to tap into the video input for the screen or has a hack to change the circuitry to play DVD movies, please let me know.

That "wisdom" stems from the fact that most, if not all, states have a law that makes video screens (with the ability to play movies or receive TV signals) forward past the driver's head illegal. In my Warner Brothers Venture, the flip down monitor can't be seen by the driver, even if the seat is all the way back and reclined to a comfortable position. If you go to Circuit City to get an overhead TV system installed, they must comply with the same laws. Somehow there is enough of a loophole that the Nav system is legal, but I'm sure it wouldn't be if it supported full video/audio.

Besides, some people can't talk on the phone and drive, let alone have a movie kicking in front of their faces.

I find this VERY interesting, since the TL's DVD-based navi is manufactured by none other than ALPINE! So where, exactly, ARE these inputs in the aftermarket system? Can anyone suggest how the factory system might be modified to run DVD movies?
