I couldn't believe it... they are the exact same tires except the size.... why did MB use those Mich's anyways?

Why? I would say that working out a deal for a good price from Mich is very high up on the list. Still is shocking that MB would choose that tire on such a high class car.

MB's used Mich tires if she bought her car in the winter/fall time or if she specifically wanted all-season tires.

Usuallly if you buy your MB/BMW in the summer time they have summer tires using the Continental Contisports

Because overall, they are a good high quality tire for all seasons. They, however are not for high performance. For most TLers, the stock tire is more than adequate.

Can't answer the question posed, but was soooooo glad to get rid of the Mich's @ 38K. Have been driving Dunlop SP9000 245/50's on stock rims for about 17K and love 'em. Tried Pirelli's too, but too loud. . .

The stock michelins are eventually terrible! They are nice for the first couple thousands of miles but their handling soon terribly degrades as the tread wears down towards half life; read around - this is a fairly common complaint.
I would spin these tires in the rain from a stop just trying to move the car.
I've ugraded to the Bridgestone Turanza LS-H and it's way better than stock except in the snow department (slightly worse).

What's the best replacement tires as far as Ride/Noise Comfort that I can get? I drive in light snow.

A little story from 1992.

When new MB S class was developed (W140), they put on a V rated Michelins, for a top speed of 150 MPH. Well, it turned out that because of the weight of the vehicle, if the car would sit for a while, those tires developed flat spots, and would vibrate and make noise while driving.

Michelin did not have other V rated tire in that size. So, MB had to settle on H rated tire, and put in a speed limiter - 130 MPH, as much as tires would handle. Instead of replacing tire suplier...

So I gues it tells a little about the relationship they have... and why MB still uses crappy Michelins...

Hmm, i have been having that crap with screeching and slipping with my stock tires (under there for 48000 miles), so.. should i replace? if so, with what? (i'd prefer to keep my stock rims, considering i want to trade in for an 04 next year)

Michelins are quiet and they choose it bcuz of this quiet thread pattern Yes it does suck in the rain, my spins and my tires got no grip either. I got 34,000 miles and will switch to a gripper one when I replace the michellins
