My dealer is using 5W30 what should I do?
I was wanting to use Mobil 1 but as has been discussed here Mobil 1 only has 5W30 as well.
My dealer is using Castrol 5W30 because of the pervious TLs used it. They are getting 5W20 but could not get a date.
I'm at 3800 now, I need to change it. What do you guys think.

I sent email to Castrol, Valvoline, and Mobil.
Mobil has no plans to make a 5W20 synthetic, Castrol makes a 5W20 synthetic blend (incredibly hard to find though), and Valvoline also has no plans to make a 5W20 synthetic.
In synthetic grades, the 20 vs. 30 is really not a big difference, so I'm using Mobil 5W30 Mobil 1.

Not a Blowhole
But not Castrol full synthetic.
It is only a G3 lube, not a G4 like Mobil 1 or Valvoline or Pennzoil syns. Redline is a G5.
A G3 is marginally better than a G2 (mineral oil) but way below G4 or G5 lubes in terms of longevity, protection, etc.
In Europe, the Syntec sold here is not allowed to be labeled as synthetic - it is basically a fortified oil, commonly known as a hydrowax.
If you are going to have to pay full syn money, get a full syn - G4 or better!

5w-20 oil
Guys--I too wondered about this first oil change and that wierd 5w-20 oil the manual recommends. I am a big fan of Redline (polyoil ester base) Redline is some of the finest oils you'll find but it costs $8./Qt too! I sent them an email asking them about Honda requirements and viscosities. Redline makes a 5w-20 synthetic but couldn't help me on cracking Hondas code on ATF or anti-freeze type. As in Japan, these guys keep secrets and stick together. I don't want to do anything to damage my car or harm my warranty so I want to follow Honda's desires for now. I have domestic cars too and they are not so clanish about types of products allowable. (shame on Honda here)

Why do you believe you're in dire need of an oil change at 3800 miles? Today's modern oil blends only require changing for 2 reasons, fuel contamination and moisture. Way back in yesteryear it was mandatory to change oil frequently because the engines lacked efficiency. There was a tremendous amount of fuel contamination.
The factory service interval is 7,500 miles. The philosophy of 3,000 and 3,500 mile oil changes has been pushed on us by oil companys and companys offering quick oil changes. What makes them more of an authority on this issue than the company that built the engine and invested millions of dollars in research?
50 weight oil doesn't belong in any street engine. Thick oil reduces horsepower and is detrimental to fuel economy. I don't know of any competition engines that use oil this thick. The heavy weight oil is typically reserved for oil burning engine, or those who insist they need it.
Although the 99-01 TL's came with 5W-30 oil, advise your dealer to read the "Acura Advisor". The suggested service replacement oil for all 99-02 TL's is 5W-20.

The 2002 TL manual has says "Follow the Severe Conditions Maintenance Schedule if you drive your car MAINLY under one or more of the following conditions:
*Driving less than 5 miles(8 km) per trip or, in freezing temperatures, driving less than 10 miles (16km) per trip.
*Driving in extremely hot [over 90 F (32C)] conditions.
*Extensive idling or long periods of stop-and-go driving.
*Trailer towing, driving with a roof rack, or driving in mountainous conditions.
*Driving on muddy, dusty, or de-iced roads.
I only live 7 miles from work and here the temperature is generally in the 90s.
That and its the first oil change.
