My Day at the Acura Dealership
I have an 03 Acura TL with 59400 miles.
I scheduled a day so that Acura can fix my SRS problem in which the sensor was under warranty. So I decided to have an oil change, transmission fluid changed, fix my stupid radio (u have to disconnect the antenna and then enter in the code), he also asked if I wanted to get my AC filter changed and I told him "yes". They were so nice to me even gave me a loaner car (08 TSX) AWWWW.
Now I got back to the dealership after work the same day at 7:30 PM my bill was $217 bucks. They charged me for 1 filters $16.20 when I can get them for $14.73 each and labor $52 buck WTFFFFF. That crap takes 5 minutes to change and they made $10 bucks an hour. So in order to get my beautiful car out there I had to pay for it and the sales person who to the order was not there.
I cant sleep because they charged me 52 bucks to pull out some stupid filters. I knew I should have done it myself. I cant wait til i get there at 7 in morning cuz all hell is going to break loose.

You were at the dealer, what'd you expect? You knew they overcharge for service. Why is that their fault? In fact, they actually seemed to help you out on the labor for the cabin filter. Dealers typically charge $100/hour for labor. They charged you for 1/2 hour. Most shops have a minimum they charge for labor. Some break it down to 1/2 hour increments, while others charge 1 hour minimum. Most dealers charge 1 hour minimum. They take the time to put it in their garage and perform the service. Time is money. They have every right to charge you just as you have every right to buy the part, take it home and install it YOURSELF!

it looks like you never read azine threads or DIY section on things like cabin air filter-
where we all pay between 12 and 17 bucks for the set of 2 filters it requires,(they sit side by side in a plastic tray/holder and slip into place- then held secure by the plastic panel
and if its the first time changing- the plastic cover panel must be cut- if there are leaves inside it needs to be vacced clean etc.
Shops often charge $150 for the job!
And having them change 3 qts of trans fluid is worthless and expensive IMO
There are rare occassions you have to disconnect the antenna to get the radio to accept its code
So you had the battery disconnected for something--- to cause the radio to lock itself
What was that job?
How many times must it be written-- know the codes!! and store them on your acura.com account for free- write them down where you can find in the car - like the owner book

on the original estimate copy you signed at dropoff, there was a price for the work - not including taxes...that amount cannot be exceeded without your PRIOR verbal authorization-to the work beng done, and then you must initial on the final invoice that you were contacted and agreed to a specific higher price
Often found when working on brakes or other jobs where parts that need to be replaced are discovered as its taken apart- like they thought they rotors could be resurfaced but they need to be replaced- you get a call- its going to be an extra 200- you say ok- they fix the car
If you were not contacted for an increase over original quote- by law you only pay the original price agreed to

Speaking of overcharging dealerships, I went in to Prestige Acura here is Santa Rosa CA to get a quote for the 105K servicing. They told me $1250. Ouch. I did some looking around and I found a shop that will do my timing belt/water pump and service for $530. Certified Honda mech. I just want to know what they think they are chraging $1250 for. Not that I'm going to go there.

You told them to replace the filter. You expected them to do it for free?

Just got back from the dealership got $55.14.
I will stick to u guys on things like this but sometimes you have to sit down with the managers and settle things.
It doesnt say anywhere that I cant negotiate the price. I sat there with the managers and told them what the problem was and at the end I invited them to my restaurant tonight.
I was happy they were happy.

the labor prices are posted in the service area, you should taken the time to asked how much labor is or look around. here in ontario canada, you MUST post the labor prices per hour in an obvious area....
ur lucky they charged u half hour labor and not the full hour, douche.

You own a restaurant....and you invited them to it? Are you going to give them half off too? Or is it on the house?
If it's on the house, and you own a mid-level to high-level restaurant, you've lost more money than if you had just paid them....
Or am i missing something?

For $50 I wouldn't get excited, I'd learn. It would cost me more then $50 to make a trip to the dealer and spend anymore then 20minutes talking about my bill. I would have made a quick phone call.
In the end, I suspect you got your money back but are behind. Next time, learn to ask the cost of something before you agree to it. That way you cannot get surprised by dealer rates.
The fact they charged you $16 instead of $14 for the airfilter is moot. They likely bill $100/hour for labor and the air filter job is 15-20minutes. If they bill by 1/2hours then bam, there is your $50 in labor.
You should know this, you own a business...
If someone ordered food from you, was surprised by the bill and then came back the next day to negotiate. Would you give them some of their money back?
This whole thing is silly...

TLGOD84, you are luckier than most people. It only cost you $52 to find out the fact that ALL dealerships charge high prices.

Good thing you stayed away from Marin Acura, they want $2400 for the 105k service.

I don't know why you guys are bashing this guy. Maybe he doesn't have much experience with stealerships. O and btw with the whole inviting him to the restaurant thing... 1. the cost of food is cheap (costs nowhere near $50 even if they bought the best things on the menu) 2. he can gain new customers
but yeah next time definitely try the DIY section before you head over there.

Dude, flat rate to replace the cabin air filter is 0.5 hours. For the dealership to charge you 1/2 hour labor at their posted hourly labor rate is LEGITIMATE.
If you think it's too expensive, then either replace it yourself or take it to a quick lube shop that charges by the service.

That's what I was thinking. Labor at ~$100/hr ($96 here) and a 1/2 hour time ...
I've seen others pay in excess of $120 or $130 for the same item.
Nothing wrong with calling them out, but you *should* have understood what your were stepping into *before* you said, "yeah, go ahead, change the filter."
Anyway, all's well that ends wel.
BTW - you comping them that meal or charging them "rack rates"?
