mileage!!!

I noticed that taking a new way into work via highway, my mileage went from about 270/tank up to 330/tank...nothing different, same driving aggression...but man does that highway make a difference! I thought the bad mileage may have been due to some dirty parts or an old engine, but one week on the highway changed that! so for all the people getting bad mileage, try the highway if u can for a bit and see the change!

Yep the TL blows for city mileage, but shines on the HWY. I actually got better mileage out of my TL-S on the freeway than I did on my 93 Accord. In town driving was of course the opposite.

yeah...this whole time i was checking pressure, changing plugs, seafoaming...emptying my trunk...and here all i had to do was find a highway to get to work. it's an extra 4 miles to work, but the mileage so makes it worth it!! I was told once awhile ago that it's about 22city/26hwy...but lemme tell you how wrong that is...WRONG!!!

I thought that I ran across something that said 19/26 in my paperwork the other day. I am glad that someone started this thread because I was really wondering why after 240 miles, my gas needle was snuggling up to the "E". I had been meaning to do a search on the topic but this will suffice.

I don't understand your last post when you say the 22 city / 36 Hwy is WRONG...

What is wrong with that? You said you went from 270 miles per tank to 330 miles per tank. So if you are now getting 4 miles per gallon more (26 - 22 = 4) and times that by an average of say 14 gallons of gas per fill up, thats an extra 56 miles per tank full, add that to your originally 270 miles you were getting, and now you get 326 - almost 330.

So I don't see you point, what is WRONG about the 22 city /26 Hwy? Please explain.

yeah, sorry...it would help to have all the facts, eh? First off, 270 was a week of good mileage in the city. More realistically speaking, on avg weeks I get anywhere between 220-240. 270 was the best avg I get using the old route as long as I hit no traffic, and I hit all the green lights. So more realistically speaking I guess I should say 230/tank (or about 16.4 mpg) was what I was getting, and now 330+ on the avg per tank (or about 23.5 mpg). All of this is based on a 14 gallon tank of course. So in the end, I averaged 15/23 as far as mileage, and that is what I was basing my post off of. and with the difference between 22/26 and 15/23, you can see why it was a noticeable issue for me. You may as well disregard the 270 and 330 as it is more like 230 and 330 per tank. Sorry for any confusion! Hope that helps!

And alphason, I am with you with the mileage. It really took a whole new route to work for me to have an opprtunity to see firsthand how much of a change it was. 19/26 is closer to what I actually see as opposed to the 22/26 stated earlier.

Just last week I got 37mpg in my TL-S on the highway.

These things probably helped

Tire pressure: 35F - 35R
Full synthetic oil.
K&N drop in filter
94 octane Sunoco gas
All windows closed
Cruise control set at 60mph
Level ground the whole way.
Only one other person in the car (she weighs 120lbs.)

The only other thing I could do was fold in the outside mirrors.

I am just glad that you started this thread. It took a load off of my mind. I think that my wife refuels less than I do ('00 Honda Accord coupe EX-V6) and she drives a lot faster, sits through traffic, and she has a farther commute. (19 miles one way versus 10 for me) About 1o of her miles is highway mileage, but it still did not an out. the fact that this car is just not that great on gas is comforting because I thought this thing was bleeding gas from somewhere. LOL

There, fixed it. I must have fallen asleep typing that post.

I hear you, but for my daily commute doesn't make sense. I drive 17 miles each way, all city-like driving. If I wanted to take the Hwy, I would have to add at least 15 miles, making it not worthwhile.

Right now I get about 270 per tank full, I know I would do much better on the Hwy.

lol..i hear ya alphason...funny cuz my wife has an rx330 now, and even that gets better mileage than me, and we work the same distance driving the same route. Maybe it's because it's much newer..but anyway, glad to have helped you out!

jgirardi...17 miles city..i feel for ya!! at least it's consistent though, huh?

ive got 365 on a tank before which comes out to almost 25 miles per gallon, and that was mostly in town driving, you would be suprised how many miles you can get on a tank if you dont drive aggressively

I drive very aggressive and ive never gotten the bad mileage many of you have. i almost never get under 300 to a tank, and routinely get over 400

Your results may vary

Fsttyms forgets we the lowly folk, with our factory stock 5AT,
while he has a small modification to his ride which MAY affect fuel mileage

I just recently drove a total of 1,200 miles round trip going from the Bay Area, CA to Las Vegas, NV, and was able to hit 400-410 miles per tank (before the light turns on) in both directions.

Assuming the light still turns on @ 3 gallons (total tank capacity = 17.2 G), that'll roughly take me to 28.5 MPG...which if any of you guys remember, the advertised mileage for a 2002 TLS = 19 city / 29 hwy.

BTW...I have 120k total miles racked up on my ride, and I've been using synthetic since 15k.

wow...28.5 mpg is awesome!!! bangumandoo: I don't see how synthetic would hurt...but hey, logic goes, synthetic is easier on engine, which usually=better mpg...if not much at all...
