Micron air filters get VERY dirty

I replaced my micron air filters today with about 20,000 miles on the car. I found them to be extremely dirty, with mold almost completely covering the output side.

As an experiment, I stuck one of the filters in the kitchen sink with about 3 inches of warm water, bleach, and detergent. I wanted to see if the filters could be cleaned at all. They can't. But I found that after a minute or two of washing, the water in the sink was almost so dark and dingy that I couldn't see through it. (and that was just one filter!) They can hold a tremendous amount of crud!

Anyways - I'm changing mine every 20k from now on. This Florida humidity and A/C usage just grows the funkiest stuff down there... BTW - I Lysoled the **** out of the evaporator - which didn't appear to have much - if any - mold on it.

If it's so dirty at 20k, why don't you change yours at 15k instead of 20k??

Mine were pretty dirty after 11k... If it were a home HVAC filter, I would change it sooner. I posted some pics up on A-CL:

Yep you should change them every 15,000 miles or sonner if your doing it yourself. If you follow dealer service they are changed at 15K & 30K services thats every 15,000 miles.
I went with a friend to take his Lincoln for service at a Lincoln dealership. I saw a sign there that said to change every 12,000 miles.

Looking at those links...

Partsamerica.com has the Purolator filters are $12.99 for one... acp.com is 16.24 for a pair?? I think Tim wins again! haha

Does it really take two filters per car? Any instructions on how to do this yourself?

I changed mine well after 30,000 miles and the filters weren't that dirty. I guess it has to do with climate.

You've convinced me... I'll change them every 15k from now on.

Instructions were posted here.

One note about those instructions... The first time you change them, you have to cut out the "Do not Discard" panel with a razor blade or good scissors. It's marked as to where to cut. After that, you screw it on sideways as instructed. Also - I've never had to remove any trim to get the glovebox out - although it might make access easier.
