Memorial Day Weekend Gas Mileage

Hope everyone had a good Memorial Day Weekend (in the US anyway). I took a road trip to Hearst Castle about 250 miles away and got the best mileage ever since owning my TL-S. I normally average 22.5 MPG driving 80% on congested Los Angeles freeways. If I do more local driving, I drop down to ~20MPG.

My average for the trip was:

Going: 28.18 MPG (ran into morning traffic for 40 minutes, otherwise 70-80 MPH)
Coming back: 30.78 MPG (smooth sailing all the way, 70-80MPH, A/C on)

Other members on this forum have reported 30+ MPG average but I didn't think I would ever be one of them. I think this is phenomenal for a 260hp 6 cylinder car. I took a Ford Focus rental on a trip to Vegas once and I only averaged 27 MPG. Anyone else get awesome gas mileage on the weekend?

Went away too this weekend. Not sure what my average was as I didn't fill up all the way on the way back but I got 430 miles to a full tank, the neddle wa just slightly above the E marker. That was night driving, no ac, no windows down, about 80 the whole time. 20-30 miles were city driving after I got there.

What road were you driving on? I-70 goes from Hays to Kansas City and the speed limit is 70 mph, except of course in construction where it dips down to 60. I've never been pulled over going less than 80 mph on Interstate and I live in Hays and make trips to Salina, Manhattan, Lawrence and KC all the time. Oh, and not trying to hijack this thread. Back to the subject at hand, this weekend I averaged just under 30 mpg and that included driving in the city for about 15% of the time.

Man, I love these threads. Took a 500 mile round trip to ATL and averaged 28.9 MPG, with about 75% highway driving, 20% city driving, and 5% rush hour traffic (bumper to bumper). Driving was pretty rough and I hit vtec a couple of times. The way back was much better. I got 33.7 MPG. Highway speed was 75-80 mph the whole time. I had 2 passengers on the way there and 3 passengers and 250 lbs of luggage and shopping on the way back. This car impresses me everyday.

I drove 1651 miles over memorial day weekend. Overall I averaged 32.6 mpg. But, here is the shocker. For the last 400 miles I averaged 37.4 MPG!! I kid you not. (And yes I did double check my math). It was 100% highway cruising with only a driver and luggage in the car, windows up, AC on. Cruising speed was 73-74 (using cruise control) on I-81 in VA (speed limit is 65 and it's heavily patroled; have to keep it under 75 to avoid getting nailed). Made one stop in the whole 400 miles. I don't know if this made a difference, but I was rolling on brand new Michelin MXV4-A Plus tires.
