A little respect on the road.

Just sharing some experiences. I'm 37 years old and I can say my raucous reckless days are mostly gone. One night I was at a McDonald's drive thru, and a guy in front of me was in a older model 5-liter mustang. He was showing off by chirping his tires every few feet before he got to the pay window. When I got my chow, I saw Mr. Mustang and parked close to him. Later on I came close and said hi, and "admired" his black rumbling All-American muscle-car. I told him if he didn't mind, we can test our cars on the clear back street behind some industrial areas and see if he can see how powerful his "beast" can kill an Acura. The guy flatly declined, shook his head and said " No way man, that thing will eat the mustang alive" He went on to nicely decline the offer and drove away waving. I'm thinking a done-up Type-S must have given him a good run before.

I also experienced having some ricers try to rip loose on a green and after "eating them alive" waited for them at the next light only to see them drive away shamed.

I guess the car commands a bit of respect somehow. But I also know where to place mine if I'm beside an M5 or a 911 stopped on a light.

Vicman

Our cars command a lot of respect on the road specially the Type S, add to that if the guy have no clue about the car and it can be intimidating for that person, more so if you approach the person and pretty much say lets go race. This will be a clue to any idiot with half a brain to think hey this guy must be really fast, confident, it works wonders.

MY best friend has an '89 5.0 Mustang, I barely beat him in my '97 in a few races, other times he beats me, especially off the line... it has a lot of backslapping torque. One thing he definitely concedes.... my interior is a lot nicer

the guy must have had some flows and that's it...i just don't get it, those 5.0's are so easily and cheaply modded...if you have a car like that, it SHOULD be modded

I don't know how much HP a 5.0 Mustang has, but a 5.0 FR VS a 3.2 FF, he should win anyway, right?

The older 5.0's were fast, but by today's standards a stock one is not all that fast. They had 225hp and 300 ft-lbs of torque. For a manual you're looking at around 6.4 seconds 0-60 and a 15.0 second 1/4 mile. Nowadays you can do that in a V-6 Accord Coupe 6-speed. My understanding is that a 3.2TL Type-S will pull about 6.2 0-60 and a 14.8 1/4 mile. So all you need to do is stomp on the gas and you'll take any stock 5.0 mustang.

Now the newer mustangs are a different story. Stock for stock my Bullitt would take any TL, even a Type-S. But then again, that is comparing apples to oranges, so it is beside the point (please no flames). I love my Legend, too, and even though it's a '91 it's still quicker than most cars on the road today. There is no doubt that the Japanese can do more with less - get more power from less displacement, and make a higher quality car all the way around.

Most of those Mustangs just have exhausts. Some have a bit more but they're old cars and I'm sure most don't perform like they did 5 or 10 years ago. I had a run-in with a nicely modded 5.0 last year. He cut me off in a isolated city road and then downshifted and blew smoke onto me. I took this as an insult and chased him down. This was back when I was reckless by the way. I gained on him all the way throughout and finally passed him safely at 90 mph. Since then, I've seen him two more times but he stays away or one time even turned off into an empty parking lot just to avoid me. The Type S does command a lot of respect on the road, specially by guys who were fooled into racing one because of it's sleeper look.

I almost forgot, have you guys ever noticed how bad people drive these days? When I'm in the 1996 4-cyl Accord or the 1995 Mercury Villager, many many people abuse me over and over. I drive about the same style (usually) as I do when I'm in the TL, going not too fast or not too slow. It's almost like they're afraid to victimize a Type S but just can't leave 4-cyl cars and minivans alone. This makes me think about supercharging my minivan, lol. That was a joke by the way.

I know exactly what you mean!!! I experience this all the time when I drive my 94 Previa. I feel that I dont get extended respect and courtesy, and people tend to cut you off more or do things they normally wouldnt do to me if I was in my TYPE S!! I thought I was the only one feeling this!

yeah exactly, i get used alot when im in my mom's Oddyssey, but when it comes to the line, i blow em away. quite a few people dont expect a minivan to be that quick. I held it against a 323, but jus barely before i got smoked, but hey thas pretty good for a van. yeah i like surprising people w/ the oddy

To tell you the truth, when I'm in my Villager, I am afraid of Oddysseys too. The 240 horses are formidable since I'm only making 151 hp I can take one off the line though, thanks to the Nissan philosophy of low end torque and Honda philosophy of mid-range torque

I figured since it ended with a question 4 months ago it was worth reviving to answer the question.

Well thats exactly I drove around cars like the TL before I owned one. Its the HIDs. Annoyingly bright to someone without a dimmed mirror. No one wants to get in front of a car with them. At least I don't.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm a little careful around more expensive cars. My insurance policy is only for 50k But I think minimum is 20k, so someone with minimum needs to worry more about an Acura TL than a old minivan/accord. Or they know you can catch them in the type-s and they're skurred.

The old stock 5.0L was only 215hp (the 95 anyway). Slow. They are probably heavier too (iron block V8), not much match for our 260hp. Funny the guy didn't even try after "showing off".

I would like to point out that I drive a Mustang (spelled with an 'M') and I have nothing but respect for the TL. I've wanted one since I was younger (I still want one now), and have always known they were quick on top of being really nice. The Type-S is a hell of a car and Honda continues to impress with their ability to make a really luxurious car also be very powerful and fast. They did it in the 80's/90's with the Legend as well. People don't think the Legend is that fast until you drop it down a gear (5-speed) and smoke 'em. So while a lot of people don't know what Acuras have in store for 'em, don't assume that every guy driving a 'stang is a cocky jerk. Some of them also drive Acuras and think they're great cars!
