license plate light

So my friend put red bulbs on his rear licence plate light and he ended up with an extra bulb and gave it to me. I was wondering if it's illegal to have a colored light on the license plate? If so, what is legal?

I believe any color is illegal even hyperwhite. The only vehicles that can use a colored bulb are emergency vehicles. You can do it but youll definitely get hassled by the PO PO:p

I am currently using hyperwhite which has a little blue tint to it during the night. I havn't been pulled over but one of my friend has. His civic uses 2 hyperwhites while we use one bulb. The police said his licence plate was too bright. As for red, its a nono. My friend with a bimmer put red in there and was pulled over. Both got tickets for their lights.... At least that is the law for Ontario, i don't know if they will allow that in the place you live.

I've hyperwhite on mine too. But I have a light blue plate cover, so from afar it looks like the color is from the plate, not the bulb

Yes it's illegal and what's the point of putting color bulbs on the license plate? That's one place cops will look at when they are behind you.

I remember my friend checking out the vehicle code, and all it says about lights is that you cannot have a blinking or steady blue or red light. I got pulled over for blue blinkers (and I do mean blue!) on my previous car, but ran hyperwhites in my signals in the rear and the cop didn't say anything. He did mention that you can have either clear or amber bulb in the front, but only an amber bulb in the rear...not too sure about the license plate lights, but that might help.
