kind of excited, kind of nervous

This is my first post to the forum guys. So I needed a DD and was dead set on a Honda or Acura. I've owned a CRX and an Integra Special Edition and loved them both. I found this 02 TL on CL and was really impressed by how good it looked so I went to drive it. It has 172,000 miles on it but looks like it's taken care of. No dents, no rust, just some scratches. Engine bay is CLEAN. Interior is really nice, save for some wear on the drivers seat. Drives, shifts, and runs GREAT. I bought it for $2600 and was very pleased. However, I did not check the headlights and one of the low beams is out. This is not a cheap fix, hopefully i can do it myself. Last night while it was raining, the drivers side door light came on driving home. I've read on here this is common and should just be the jamb switch. My real concern is the hesitation after take off from a stop sign. It doesn't engage right away, but again shift just fine. Now i'm worried I got taken and will be buying/fixing a tranny soon. Please give me some insight. I have pics attached.

Looks like you snagged a nice ride for a great price, congrats! You won't find a ride with similar specs and features for a similar price anywhere.

I wouldn't give up on her just yet. Can you describe the hesitation in greater detail? Do a 3x3 (3 quarts, 3 times) drain and fill on the transmission (DO NOT FLUSH) with Honda DW-1 to see if it clears up the transmission issues. You might buy a $30 OBD2 scan tool to plug in and see if there are any pending check engine codes. Consider cleaning your solenoids and perhaps change out your transmission filter (round cylinder on the transmission by the battery tray - spins off). Let us know the condition of your transmission fluid.

The OEM ballasts have problems. Consider aftermarket or upgrade to LED (you can do this yourself).

This is a car that can easily go 250K miles. Many people around here have theirs many times past that point.

Do aftermarket HIDs... It's easy to swap....

The transmissions on these cars are known to fail, some have, some haven't. Just take that into consideration. I have a friend with an 02 CL-S and he has an ody tranny sitting at home just incase his decides to go out. I think he's pushing close to 200k, and it has not went out on him. *knock on wood*

Yes Chojun, that's what i thought, it was a lot of car for the $$$! From a stop, after I hit the accelerator, it hesitates a couple seconds, then engages and takes off. I hate to use the word "clunk" but it does make a sound. It doesn't do this every time, just noticed it a few times this morning. But other than that, it shifts just fine and no problems pulling out to pass and mashing it. Are you referring to the tranny solenoids? Ill change fluid and filter and update y'all.

Yep tranny solenoids. One is on top directly underneath the battery tray, the other is in the same location but on the front, like behind the bumper. There is info around here on how to inspect/clean those.

When it hesitates, does engine RPMs go up when you press on it but the wheels don't move? If so I think there are some members around here that would recommend that you check/replace your transmission pressure switches. If your transmission is on its way out you can swap in a Honda AV6 for ~$1500 installed and be on your way until Armageddon and still be into the car for much less than it's worth.

Ok, I'll look up how to clean them. As far as RPM's, I didn't notice. I"ll have to look next time. I'm gonna try everything before replacing tranny.

If your ATF is good then just add 2 XADO AT EX120. If not then do a 100% ATF and trans filter exchange and add 2 XADOs.

Unplug the jam switch and the light should go off. If not then you have a short in that wire. Trace the wire to find the short. The wire runs along the inside of the rocker trim panel area, through the center post to the jam switch.

I'm probably just gonna do the 3x3 flush and change the filter. As far as the door, the window switch works when it wants to. I was told by a tech that the jamb switch runs through the window switch so it may be bad.

The manual calls for 4 times drain and fill. It says to do the procedure 3 times, then drain and fill, which is a 4th time.

I realize it's air, but I thought that replacing the o rings would solve the issue. Do I just check fittings and hoses?

You need get the front wheels on cardboard or slightly jacked up and turn the wheels lock to lock at least several times until there are not any more little bubbles in the reservoir. But eventually the bubbles will work their way out unless there is still a leak in the system.

Thanks Chojin. I did move the wheel back and forth between emptying and filling the reservoir. I just did the spray nozzle method and put in 3 bottles of Honda fluid. It just demoralized me after doing all that and it was worse.

You could also have incorrect tension on the P/S belt. I don't recall the exact specifications so take what I remember with *caution*: Adjust tensioner until you get 1 inch deflection with 20lbs force. You'll want to do a search and find out what the exact specifications are for the belt though.
