Lightbulb K&N MPG before and after installation

I installed a K&N in my '02 TL-S (bought 5/01) in January '02 and kept track of the MPG stats for a before and after comparison, thinking the post installation MPG would show a slight increase. Each average was calculated with the MPG from nine tanks. Driving profile was essentially the same (mix of city/hwy).

Average MPG before: 26, high 29, low 25, Std. Dev. 1.41
Average MPG after: 26, high 28, low 25, Std. Dev. 0.87

Is this result typical for a TL-S?

This kind of contradicts the results from another vehicle I used a K&N in ('96 S-10 Blazer V6, got a 2 MPG improvement). I was hoping for a MPG gain, but did get a slight increase in acceleration. My goal was to get a MPG increase payoff from the K&N, which I will get anyway since it's reusable.

What other mods can I try to boost the MPG? TIA...

I've heard that the stock K&N replacement doesnt do anything in terms of MPG. If you want to increase your MPG then I'd suggest switching over to a high caliber 5w20 synthetic motor oil. Although technically I dont think you are out for the best MPG, but more for saving money in the long run right? Because I pay 7.75 for a quart of Redline and I doubt that will pay for itself with the added MPG it gives you.

The other thing you could try is inflating your tires to 35psi or greater. I had mine set to 37.

Another stats nut! Could you run a T-ratio on that for us, to test for significance?

I also bought my '02 in May 2001 and I have a K&N filter as well. I don't really know what my average mileage was before as I put in the filter soon after getting the car, but I get about what everyone else on here seems to get (I average 23 overall, 27ish highway and 20ish city). I don't think it helped in a statistically significant way but I don't think it hurt either.

I know this isn't for the TL-S, but I've also studied the effect of using a K & N filter. Just check out this thread...

http://www.acura-tl.com/forum/showth...highlight=Test

I've had my first oil change and am waiting to hit 5000 miles to redo the test. I notice a small increase in acceleration subjectively.

I have not notices a difference in either performance or gas mileage. It may be my imagination, but it does seem to "growl" more than stock.

And to ensure greater accuracy, we should test at the 5% confidence level.

maybe a CAI adds to MPG if you're the type not to gas your vehicle. I don't have any evidence of it.

I noticed adding an STP concentrated Fuel Injector will raise the MPG number by at least 2 MPG

Talking

Intake "growl" is noticable after the K&N installation, but only if you really get into it.

I've tried tire pressure increases as well, and got the highest MPG (29) in my sample after inflating the fronts to 40 and rear to 37 (can't remember what they were before). I've since dropped the fronts down a bit due to the harsh ride.

I was interested in the standard deviation calc since the actual calculated MPG for both samples was 26.3333 (pardon me while I round this down). Guess I should have calculated on a larger sample.

Yeah man... how can we know the MPG without a Paired testing at 95% confidence level.

On a serious note: I'm averaging in the low 20's. Maybe 23ish for mostly HW driving. Is that due to my avg. cruise speed of 80+? I'm have 5-20 but not a Syn or Syn-Blend.

I notice a little more growl. Does anyone notice more hiss sound when turning off the engine? I can't remember if there was the same amount with the stock filter. I like the hiss sound

You could try http://www.haloplug.com/ They worked for me. I will buy them again after mines have around 10k miles. The haloplugs were replaced with stock plugs after the engine overheated (not related to halo or any plugs)

After the halo's were replaced with stock ones, my MPG when down again. No performance increase felt with halo plugs.

For the people with K&N drop in filter. There will not be much increase in performance if you didn't take out the resornator.

Opps they don't have them for the type S model, but you could still try them.

havent noticed any significant mileage improvements after the addition of my Denso's and the Comptech Drop in. Overall my mileage has been the same although at the same time my right foot seems to have gotten a bit heavier than it used to be.
