Just raced my cousin's '03 Maxima GLE

Just thought I'd share a fun story with you ... My cousin and I just both got new cars, he got a '03 Maxima GLE and I got a '03 TL-S of course ... So now that we've both finally broken our 1000 miles, and he's up visiting for the weekend, we figured it'd be fun to race ...

So we got to a redlight and lined up, unfortunately it wasn't a 100% fair race because he had 2 other people in the car and I had none ...

Off the line, I peeled out (even though VSA was *ON*), so he got the jump on me ... but by the time I hit 3rd gear I was already dead even with him and pulling fast ... I don't know if the weight had anything to do with it, or just bad driving skills on his part (I don't mean to say that I'm a great driver or anything, this is the first car I've had that could actually move) ... I was just really surprised at how hard I was pulling on him and then pulling away from him when we finally shut off (due to traffic in front of us). Was a lot of fun although I really don't like pushing the car so hard. I figure the two cars are relatively even since the Maxima weighs less than the TL-S and has more torque ... although I was told that the short 4-speed transmission on the Maxima makes it slower ...

Anyways just thought I'd share my story ... Had some fun, got a good adrenaline rush, and would have won if I had more room

And it just goes to show ya ... paper stats don't really factor into street races a whole heck of a lot sometimes... and sometimes they're dead on. It all depends on the circumstances, eh?

Nice to know what it does against one of those 255hp auto Maximas. 6 speed would probably win...what's the quarter mile time for a 6 speed Maxima?

Next time or anytime you race, ALWAYS TAKE VSA OFF. It gives you a much better start, even if you peel out. If you took VSA off, you would have smoked him even worse!

I agree... I think VSC cuts back on fuel, too, when both wheels are spinning and apply brake isn't enough.....

Yeah it does cut fuel, you can feel the engine almost shut off.

I don't know about you... but wait about another 1000 miles and do it again. My TL didn't really starting feeling "limber" until it had over 2000 miles on it. So you would probably smoke him even more.

This is my 3rd Honda... and I'm almost afraid to get another type of car because no other seems to have the high rpm thrust. Maxima's have a lot of low end grunt... but as a result they break their tires loose too easily. But I prefer the feeling of knowing that ok... it's hauling ass now, but wait until 4800 rpm, then you'll see some s?%t. Whereas the Maxima feels the same all the across the rev-range.

eswartz,

Well, I have nearly 3000 miles on it now ... So I think I should be pretty much done with my break in period.

When we both first got our cars a month or so ago, he only had a few hundred on it, and I had JUST gotten the car so I had under 100 miles on the car ... So no point in racing to 2000 rpms

This was the first time we hung out since then, and he has around 2500 miles and I have about 2800 miles on my car (I've been driving more than he has)

I have both a 02 Maxima and 02 TLS, and have lined them up me driving Max, brother driving the TLS. On each occasion I the Maxima took off faster and had the lead up till about 80 better low end and at about 90 we were pretty even(both had traction control on to prevent wheel spin especially the Max which has tons of it). The Maxima feels faster down low but overall they are about even. People are running 14.6's or so in 02 and 03 auto Maximas stock just like TLS's go to Maximaorg. Nissan beefed up the tranny for 02 and for a 4 spd auto it shifts great.

What happens after 100 mph? Does Maxima feel much slower like TL-S does or it keeps going fast?

Its pull is decent at 100 and slightly higher, not much different than the TLS at these speeds is when drag starts to come into play.

One 14.6 Auto Maxima BTW. Others are 14.9-15.4 and most are in the 15s. Please look at Maxima.org if you don't believe me. Of course we are talking Stock.

Also the 6spd MAximas are having some tranny failures now, so its not looking good for them.

Monte TLS,MAX,

Hey, I dont doubt that your Maxima ends up being faster off the line than your TL-S. Chop it up to road conditions, driving skill, slight differences in the cars, differences between the '02s and '03s, the fact that my cousin's car is a GLE which doesnt have a "sport tuned" suspension... but I know for sure that I was pulling on him hard in 3rd gear and we both shut off around 80-85mph. I had already easily passed him by the time we shut off, and he got a good 1 second or so jump on me because my tires spun out. If we had continued to race, I don't know how much more I would have gained on him (or perhaps he would have started to gain on me when I entered my first overdrive gear).

Don't forget that he had probably about ~300 lbs. of extra weight in his car because of the 2 extra passengers (one was a girl who doesnt weigh more than 120, and the other was his dad who I'm guessing weighs around 200). The TL-S does weigh about 250 lbs or so more than the Maxima GLE too.

As people have said before, in street races, there's no telling what can happen ... A car with less significantly less horsepower still has the potential to win when you factor in driver's skill, road conditions, and a world of other factors.

another reason the Maxima was a slower than your TL/S is because it takes longer for the Maxima to get completely broken in as the car gets more miles it gets faster and faster, but your cousin's GLE ain't putting down all her 255hp quite yet.

The Maxima is fully broken in by 1000 miles. The TL-S and CL-S usually take longer like any Honda, about 2-3k of miles. Since they have much finer specs they go by in the engine it just takes forever for them to break in. Ask Bill99GXE if you don't believe me. It took my car 6k of miles to break in fully, per oil tests and the way the car responds now.

I really have no idea about how long it takes to break in these cars, but I think him having around 2500 miles and my having around 2800 miles is a fair comparison.

If the Maxima or TL-S gets faster with more miles on it, then so be it ... But at that point in time thats where our cars were. If there's a next time, we'll see what the results are.
