I did a recall search on their site. It pulled up...

Make : ACURA Model : 3.2TL Year : 2003
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 04V176000
Recall Date : APR 13, 2004
Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 1099796

This could just be all of the ones they produced. This is for the recall, not necessarily failures. Still looking...

How about PE02081 as the NHTSA Action Number.
Same link as above.
Look for the file INRL-PE02081-15340.pdf
Page 475 starts to show some #s.....I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for.

The thing with these trannies is that they can go anytime without much warning.

Kris,

I know you have thought about this and I know you are frustrated now, but here is my two cents worth on the defecting issue....

Fact 1... you have got a ton of miles on your car. Resale on it will be pretty low at that milage. I would say maybe 5k or so as a guess.

Fact 2.. you drive more than my long haul tractor trailer driving brother (not really but you do tend to put a lot of miles on a car) and whatever you drive is gonna rack up a lot of miles

Conclusion ... If everything else seems to run well on the TL, you still like how it rides, the body is holding up, etc I say you should consider keeping the car and just replacing the tranny.. AGAIN... (sorry to hear that by the way)

You have already taken a huge depreciation due to milage that you put on the car. At 185k the buyer will be looking at how the car runs currently and not how many miles are on it to make their decision to buy. Hence, if you have 185k or 585k it will make much less difference than the 85k to 185k jump. If you get a new car you will have to suffer this depreciation again because you are definately gonna put on the miles.

I hope you see where I am going with this and won't belabor the point any more unless you want me to explain what I am trying to say more.

I just think you should keep the car and drive the wheels off of it unless :
a. you dont like it anymore.
b. other things are wearing out (like body parts, etc)
c. you have reason to believe it will have serious repairs in the future

Maybe you could keep it as a "beater" car and drive it for work (which is where the bulk of your miles comes from i assume) and use the Caddy for pleasure. Your not really gonna get a lot for it anyway.... I dunno... just some thoughts.

Plus, If you get a new car that means new car payments which suck. Maybe 2k (i don't know how much the tranny replace/rebuild costs) and you have a known reliable, except for the tranny obvioulsy, car, and no payments.

As always just my humble opinion... take it for what its worth... less than 2 cents I bet *smiles*

Yea i know exactly where your coming from, i go thru this with all my cars (not the tranny issue). i typically go thru 1 car every 2 years, but this one i really like, just not teh tranny issue.
i was looking at the dealeer not that long ago and they were going to give me 7k on trade to a caddy cts.
id like to keep the car for a beater but this whole tranny failure once a year for me is getting ridiculous. if it were to last atleast 2 years at a crack it wouldnt be so bad.

im just looking to get a more reliable car i guess. this down time for me without a car and having to constantly rent one every time it died is what im getting really sick of

I am confused. Is this the problem with tranny or problem with owner/driver? If it is the tranny problem, then they should fix it if the same symtom repeatedly re-occured. If it is drivers problem, then it is not really an issue. According to MikePA our car should not have tranny problem, so why are you and many others getting too many tranny replacements? Is the dealer really want us to come back that many times to fix same problem? Sorry, if I am being ignorance.

its NOT the driver, its not the dealer, its the car. Period! the tranny has a design flaw. i do the easiest driving a car can do (95%+ HWY) and i have had 4 failures.

4 trannies are too much. With the cost of the tranny replacement, I don't know if it is worth it for you to put in another one, unless you could find a beefup tranny. I guess the cost could run more than the car itself. I have no complaint about our car except the tranny. Everything else is just for discussion minor issue. Tranny is a known issue, but they have no solution for it.

Kris, I give you a lot of credit for keeping the car through 4 tranny failures. The TL is a great car but the tranny issue for us 2nd gen owners is a big concern, Honda has totally screwed us, if you ask me. I am keeping mine until it fails again. Like you said I still like the car and enjoy driving it too. Hope you still stay a member on the forum, because you have been very helpful to alot of folks. Good luck.

Yeah good luck with the CTS. How much are you looking at paying if you don't mind me asking?

They look pretty nice and seem like the same $$$ as the new TL. I had a '01 Corvette Z06 prior to my TL-S. It was nice but weird should would go wrong with it and the interior was blah for the $$$ (GM?). I haven't poked my head in a CTS though -- maybe I will for shits and giggles.

with trade in and 3.5 k down i was looking at 20k. 31k new.
the interiors are actually really nice.
i didnt want the sports pakage moon roof and HID's. the total pakage price on cars with those options was close to 39k. i can buy better looking rims and hid's for a fraction of the price. and i hate moonroofs. (would have bought the TL with out it if i could have)
