It's safe for Canadian to buy import TL from USA?

Hi all ,
Last friday my wife got into a accident and her 01 Infiniti i30 was a total lost....
Thanks god that she 's OK and the twin were not in the car at that time .......
So I was looking for a TL 03 for her and the kids and there 's a used car lot in Montreal Quebec Canada has several TL and MDX 2003 imported from Texas USA .
They look very nice and the price is very good
What do you guys think ? It's a good idea for Canadian to buy import TL from
the States ?
If yes what should I look for and verify in a import car ?
Anyone has this kind of experience ?

Appreciate for your input .
Thanks

Why are Texas used vehicles being sold in Canada ? I would be very cautious since so many cars were flood damaged by Katrina .

Caution - I would try finding one here in Canada

I would look at autotrader.ca or I got mine from import auto in Ottawa. Something to consider instead of taking a chance with Katrina damage!

I don't know but this place is a used car lot of Suzuki dealership
they sold 8 MDX 03 and 6 TL 03 last month ... and test drive the car and it runs fine and no obvious sign of flood .....
I did ask the saleman and he told me that there're a lot of chipper and used Acura in USA and he can not fill all demand in Canada .

No real Katrina damage in TX compared to other places. In fact we have no rustout issues like the NE with the winter salt does. Always be cautious, but the transfer may just be a function of supply and demand. Happens a lot in used cars, some companies arbitrage this way to improve sales price.

You'll need to trace and check the car's title very thoroughly. You don't want the repo man to come to your house and reclaim the car you just bought.

As Edward said, make sure the title is clean. If there is anything fishy about it, just don't buy it. Make sure the car runs/drives/feels well. Get the entire car history and see what it says. Good luck!

If I were to buy an Acura from the States and bring it back into Canada, Acura Canada would not honor the warranty. (This has been verified.)

So I'm not sure why this dealer would be selling U.S. Acuras, unless their warranties were all expired...?

Acuras are significantly more expensive in Canada than in the States. If I didn't care about the warranty, or I were buying a warranty-expired Acura, I'd do it.

But of course, be careful, as others have said....

Buy it!!! and save your money, I import CLS from states and still have warranty on tranny. You can go any day to burlington Acura like I did when my transmission is fucked up!

Sorry, don't mean to imply that Texas cars are ' Katrinas ' . Saw a show on this and it was saying that these cars were showing up on car lots in the northern states . My concern would be that one of these cars was being funnelled through this Texas car lot . Very important to check history of car since it was new. If proven to be a true Texas car ( no salt , good thing ) than go for it. Another thing , about the instrument cluster , you make it sound as if its your choice , I would have it changed , that inner ring is really small. The odometre is part of this cluster and it may have to be changed to give you a readout in kilometres instead of miles . Not sure if this cluster can be adjusted to give you distance in Kilometres .

Price is probably the upside to this deal, but 2 big downsides I would be concerend about are the lack of warranty (if the car is within the limits), and #2, resale value.

I would imagine in the future if you wanted to sell this car, the Odometer, and speedometer in Miles instead of KM would probably be a deterreant to some buyers; so keep that in mind.

I imported a TL from Florida - issues you will encounter - warranty - despite some occurrences in which Acura Canada stepped up and honored the transmission failure - you will have a bit of work your end to get them to have this corrected.

Changing the odometer is NOT really required (provides both MPH and KPH) - may just be something "user" would like to have - I left mine alone.

Certifying my TL - lack of day-time running lights - really only a $24.99 part wired to my aftermarket fog-lights and convincing the mechanic this is fine (cost me a 2-4 ($34)).

If I had to do this all over again I wouldn't - part of the issue now is selling or trading this in within Canada - will not get the same value I would in the States...

I would disagree I had my Florida imported TL tranmission corrected in Ontario - took 4 weeks to get done but in the end all is good...

Bareback : Do you have any problem to insure your imported TL from Florida ? Does the insurance company ask any particular question ?

No issues at all with getting the car insured. No special requirements from them - standard questions are asked: do you own the car etc...

If you're gonna buy an imported car ... do it yourself. You don't know if the person selling it is shady (re: salvage title and passing it off as non-salvage) or the miles were 'rolled back'. Do a little homework -- check out the www.riv.ca to see what you need to do to bring a car from the US to Canada -- and save yourself a bundle.
