Information On TYPE-S Tranny Failure
Well i have some information that i just so happen to hear direct from the Acura rep at the acura delaer he happen to be there when i went in to ask a few questions.
Ok so i then started to ask about the tranny issue's these cars seem to be having and he said the TL-S lower generation vin# did have problems due to wrong fluid from the factory being put into the tranny!!
(But yes he was very aware of this problem and said acura will address it with anyone that is having the problem)
"The best thing everyone can do is service your tranny's is what he said"
Lower Vin# he said is early 2001 when they first released them!
So more than likely the people with atleast 5 digits in the last part of the vin# are probably gonna be ok.
But things happen he said and acura is addressing the problem and even if a person's warranty runs out he said it is acura policy to do what is called a "courtesy repair at no cost" due to this problem, as long as the fluid has been flushed every 15k.
I dont know hope that helps out some :wow:
My car has 12k and the tranny feels ok knock on wood
And my vin# last 6 is 013047

Thanks for the info... I'm well into the 5 digit VIN rangle (23K) so hopefully thats true.. looks like most of the problems were owners with VINS in the lower numbers.

Well it looks like the people that have 4 digits in their vin's are the most affected correct me if i'm wrong anyone?
Other than the tranny issues from what i read the car seems to be a great car, the car iam driving sems to scoot when i need it too.

I'm not saying you full of it but I think all the Acura personel have been "coached" on what to say. It's a nice answer that he gave and someone who hasn't done extensive research would certainly buy into it. I'd love to run into a rep at the dealership and see what he has to say.

Sounds like BS to me too. If all it is is tranny fluid, they would have recalled the early 01's and changed the fluids rather than wait for a failure to replace the tranny.
my 2 cents......

ie. Talk to 03TLTYPES, he's had a boat load of troubles with his 03!

I would agree that these people are coached...I can't wait until I go to pick mine up (tranny is being replaced as I type this) and tell them what all the other service reps are saying...I wonder what story they will tell? I will let you all know.
Mine started going bad at 15K...they flushed tranny, and was OK for next 1k, then got worse. Look at the other tranny threads here...the problem exists in higher VIN# ranges, and has already shown up in '03s.

My 02' CLS's tranny went at 1500 miles... I know of many other 02's having the same problem; some on their 3rd tranny. Besides, if it was only a matter of the fluid being wrong, they would have issued a recall to save them future expense. There's no recall because the problem is a design flaw on all their CL/TL trannies. That would be rather expensive for them and theyre not gonna do it.

Ya, well if it is a design flaw it should have been fixed already???? I mean, a TL-S '03 owner had his tranny die. Is this going exist until the next TL/CL update????
So help me... If my tranny goes, watch out!!!
All of this just pisses me off...

doug told me (syncivic) he says its an under sized bearing in the differntial it is over heating and sheading meterial which clogs the selinoids (they magnetize when the car is running) causing clutch packs to fail...the fix is the same under sized bearing that has gone through a better hardening process...this is a bandaid as the new trannys may have or will have a larger bearing...this will be known soon...if the LSD from the manual fits the automatic they're still using the smaller bearing if they've gone to the larger at least in the manual...it wont fit...it still doesnt mean that the 03 auto's arent using the smaller bearing but from the sounds of it they are concidering there has been at least one case of an '03 'mission failing

my service manager also told me some stuff about bearings that don't fit. He said that it was the case with many Honda trannies.
mine went at 6,100 miles. Leased the car in November.
