Weel, i purposely drive in ss only to try to get better gas milage. In D5, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear don't change for me unless it's around 2500 or 2750 rpm. However, it SS mode, I try to change gears at around 2000-2250 rpm to try to save gas but noeither has worked at all.....gas is costing a fortune!

First of all, great forum.

I've had my TL-S for three weeks now, and I've taken one road trip.
First tank: 23.1mpg (mostly city)
2nd tank: 25.8mpg (city/highway)
3rd tank: 25.1mpg (city/highway)
These are calculated by fillups, not from the gauge. I leave the car in Auto most of the time. the AC has always been on, set to 73F.

IMO, there is no reason the car should routinely get <20mpg (barring outright abuse of the car), unless:
1. You drive a lot of short trips (<3mi).
2. The alignment is seriously off AND the brakes are dragging badly.
3. There is something wrong with the computer.
If this sort of mileage persists, I'd go in for warranty service. There's no reason to tolerate this- these engines are efficient (the whole principle behind the VTEC).

Gas containing MTBE (sold routinely in Northern cities during the colder months) will reduce fuel mileage about 10-15%. I noted this while I was in Maine for a time last winter. Check the pump for the label next time you fill up.

What type of tires are on your car? I wonder if they vary by climate. Mine came with Michelin Pilots, MXM4s.

You guys are making me depressed!

I've got 1300 miles on the car and have gotten between 19.9 and 20.5 mpg. My wife drives the car very conservatively. But, most trips are 5 - 10 miles in light city traffic. I am a little harder on it but don't drive it as often as i would like. We have to fill the tank every 300 miles.

We have yet to take a road trip and check highway mileage.

I have been tempted to reset the ECU just to see if it would make a difference.

Opinions?

I get about 19 battling traffic to and from downtown M-F, and then driving wherever on the weekends. I think that's pretty damn good, considering that I drive the car fast when possible and always blow the A/C.

These gas prices don't help, but at least here in Texas you can still get name-brand supreme for under $1.80. My mielage isn't much worse than the 4-cylinder Accord I used to have, and it's a far cry better than the '88 RX-& convertible I used to have - that dog got 14 MPG in the city!

FWIW, you guys need to realize that the fuel gauge is hardly an accurate measure. To compute MPG you'll need to keep a record of how much gas you pump and your mielage intervals. Also, remember that you have over 3 gallons left when the yellow light comes on.

Thank you...

Keep the receipt and write down the total mileage (try to use the same start and end pump for any tests). Reset the "Trip Counter A or B" and count your mileage until your refill. Write the exact mileage on the slip you get from the "guy" or from the pump.

The mileage in my CLS beats my wife's 95 Altima in city traffic -- how bad could the car be.

On the other hand, if I mash the pedal, I can get down to 14 MPG.

Mixed city/freeway 18-24 (depends)

Two best journeys (I though everyone was full of it until I restrained myself) were around 30 MPG. Only 1 or 2 "stomps", the rest of the time about 80 MPH average on freeways, and speed limit in very light traffic hwys. Wife did some of the driving.

This car can set new records for bad mileage if you just sit in stop-and-go traffic (going 10 miles in 40 minutes)

Yesterday I probably set the new record in low MPG. With beer truck overturned on the George Washington Bridge, it took me 1 hr to go about 7 miles. Probably got 7 MPG as well...it wasn't stop & go, it was stop and stop

I noticed that I just used up half a tank of gas and so far I got only 120 miles on it. What happened? I normally average about 320 miles per tank (city and highway)!!! Hopefully the next tank will improve, oh well...

OK, maybe I was premature.

I had to take an impromptu road trip yesterday. I used the last third of a tank and put 130 highway miles on it, travelling at 75 - 80mph.

My mileage for that tank was 24mpg overall but, the equation includes the first 66% of city driving too.

Not bad mileage considering I made some high-speed passes and played around some. Car was lightly loaded.

I can't complain. The car is performing as the window sticker stated, 19 city and 29 hwy. I never had a GM that performed to spec.

You will also get worse hwy MPG if going 70+ MPH.

Oh well, life goes on. The car feels so right at 80, it's tough to slow down. The slight increase in mpg's is not enough to convince me either.

the rock: you posted it up before about you tranny not working that well that could be the reason for this poor gass mileage. its just strainging on it most likely
check with the dealer and tell them bout your tranny...

I'll just throw in my info for comparision:

02 TL-S, about ~4000 miles. Always use 93-octane gas, usually Amoco or Mobil. All stats below reflect my standard mix of city/highway type driving (I haven't tracked a full highway tank yet).

I check my mileage on every tank of gas, these below reflect the averages since the car was bought. I always have the A/C on, usually set at 74 (I'm in Orlando, weather is mostly 85-95 degrees right now). My highway cruising speed is about 80-85 mph in D5.

With stock engine oil:

aggressive driving: 20-21 mpg
relaxed driving: 24-25 mpg

With 5w-30 Mobil 1 synthetic (changed out at about 3000 miles):

aggressive driving: 23-24 mpg
relaxed driving: 26-27 mpg

I'll be driving from Orlando to Jacksonville and back this week, so I will be able to finally track a mostly highway miles tank.

Just a note: I am amazed by the difference Mobil 1 makes. I used it in my 95 Maxima, but I didn't notice as much of a change in performance as I do now in my 02 TL-S. As soon as I switched from the stock oil to Mobil 1, there was an instant increase in how fast the engine would rev up, plus I am totally amazed at how much my mileage has improved, especially when driving aggressively. Just my .02

Well, between fill-ups I drove my car as hard as I could, manually shifting most of the time and running to red line a lot, using the A/C and I still got 23. Still waiting for that road trip.

Hey. Well my first trip mile on TLS from the dealer's gas used about 310 Mile. I think this ic pretty decent with 22 Mile per gallon. AC all the time and Traffic in the morning and Traffic in the afternoon. I went to highway for 20 Miles. I think this is ok for my TLS. I think i should avoid stop signs and just go for more MPG.. Then I will save some gas and my brakes. I hate stops. Makes me mad.

Not neccessarily, I drove around 70-75MPH on my last trip and I ended up with 29 MPG.

What do you mean by the "brakes are dragging badly"? I sometimes feel as though my brakes are slightly engaged.. permanently (especially noticeable at slow speeds). I get about 19mpg and I drive very conservatively.. so conservative that it's embarrassing when I see civics beat me at the traffic lights. My type-s has got 2K miles on it btw and alignment seems fine.

Red face

I've got appox 1700 miles on my 2002 TL-S and my mileage is not that great. Approx 15-17 with 1/2 of each tank on full highway. I'm checking per tank the actual mileage the correct way and just don't get it.

Has anyone approached Acura for a "official answer"? When I did, they indicated that the car is not totally broken in until 7500 miles. BUt this is negated from teh other posts which says that others are getting sometime up to 30 mpg in the city. I'm also using 91 octane gas.

Confused and concerned.

Between my last two fill-ups, I drove the ever-loving crap out of my car and had the A/C on a lot. I just wanted to see what my MPG would be in the worst-case scenario. When I filled it yesterday, it came out to 22 MPG. Not bad for thrashing the car around. This is a high performance engine and I believe it will get its best MPG at speeds over 70 MPH. My GS400 got its best MPG at speeds over 80 MPH!

I read that "low profile" tires, have increased rolling resistance so that is yet another factor in the TL-S mileage. All in all, I think the car is a great compromise of power, handling, and economy.

Also, I tend to use the SS more to downshift for passing and for approaching stops than for all out acceleration. My mileage with 4,500 miles is averaging around 23 mpg.

My mpg is getting worse. I am almost at 1/2 tank and I have only gone 125 miles! I am starting to think using the A/C is really killing the mpg.

I've recorded the fuel and milage for 11 tanks of gas and here is what I get

20.61 Average
20.56 Median
24.42 Max
18.15 Min

My daily driving is about 30% highway and 70% street traffic, and I leave the climate control set between 72-74. The max milage was from a road trip through the mountains to the open desert.

My recent mileage, well, total mileage on my TLS, currently 980 Miles, and I went to gas station 3 times and fueled 39 Gallons. and it equals to 25mpg. My driving mostly on 75% Traffic morning and night, 25% comes from weekend high way driving. This is really good, i always uses 94 Octane only. For the gas I spent about$81.00 Total in northern VA. It's really nice.!! Getting better everyday.

I picked up my car on 6/11
First tank all city driving- 17.6 mpg
2nd tank 2/3 Hwy 1/3 City- 24.8 mpg
I'm not sure the dealer topped off the tank when I bought the car which may account for the poor mileage on the first tank.

I think I had a 1 week argument over this issue. Here is a link to a tire calculator. The stock tires are very efficient in the "rolling department". The fact that they aren't that sticky and they use a ton of silica, make them high MPG tires.

There is a site, and I'm going to leave the link here -- it isn't a commercial site.

There is calculator that you can use to calc the energy used for a given profile tire.

For fun, plug in a 215/50-17 vs. 235/45-17. A low profile tire (in general) will have a wide footprint, with a narrow front-rear footprint. The tire needs to make contact with the road to stick to it, but it also is a cylinder that is deforming itself as it rolls. The lower the profile of a given tire, the less energy is used in the "deformation" process.

(You will loose MPH with sticky tires -- this is a different issue!)

Here is the link:
http://www.sirius.com/~bsquared/tireinfo/tirecalc.html

You can also visit the tire rack and look at one of their pictures of a wide section tire and you will see that as the aspect ratio goes down, the front-rear section gets smaller.

(it makes sense if you think about it for a while...)

When my girlfriend and I test drove, she said it felt like it kept braking on her - she wasn't too impressed, so we pulled over and I looked - the parking brake had been slightly depressed by the dealer. Could it be a similar issue? On the floor like that its easy to forget about, and it will suck up gas, too.

Also - for those of you getting 19 MPG - no offense but cry me a river. My Defender 90 averages between 9 and 9.5 - and uses premium - and has a 15.6 gal. tank. My range is roughly 140 miles. That is WHY I'm getting a second vehicle...

I've got 1400 miles on the car and the worst mileage I've got on a tank has been 22MPG and the best has been 25MPG. That's with about a 50/50 combination of city/highway, 80mph steady on highway travel and stock tires. Oh yeah, and I have both the moonroof visor and the OEM spoiler so I should be creating some serious MPG-sucking aero drag....

Sounds to me like something is wrong. I'd have it looked at. You should definitely be getting better than 14mpg driving conservatively.

Well, I'm on my second tank. So far it looks like I'm going to get more mileage out of this one. My first tank (which I'm sure the dealer gave my 89 octane) only got me 14.5 miles per gallon. I had to fill up at 199 miles. I've gone 150 miles since then (with 93 octane) and I have a little under a half tank.

Everything depends on which octane you use and how hard you drive. If you drive like an old lady, you should get good mileage. If you drive like I do, 20-22, 25 when driving really conservative.
