I might buy a TL but.....

I test drove a 2001 TL this afternoon. I like the car a lot; it is roomy, it is quick, and it has a lot of nice options. I am a bit shocked about the transmition problem though. I was wondering how many of you that have that problem use the 5 speed sport thing or if you keep it on automatic. If you keep it on automatic all the time and still have those problems, then I am very worried. If anyone can give me advice and suggestions, I would appreciate it. I also want to look at a 32. CL, so if anyone has any suggestions or feedback about those, I would appreciate it as well.

alot of people have it but i believe it's do to people lacking the skill of using the TipTronic which makes the tranny go faster than usual.
and i am one of those people BTW. lol..

That is what I figured. So does that mean there arent any real problems with the tranny, as long as one doesnt use the tiptronic?

A lot of people will disagree with this. The tranny should have been designed to consider the ppl who will always use SS mode. I personally use SS mode only when racing, and for the occassional "spirited driving" and my tranny is still running strong after over 20k miles.

I have a 2003 a-spec...

Many of the people who have had transmission problems dont even use sport shift. The problem does not have much to do with sports shift, considering that the similar transmissions in accords, mdxs, and odysseys have problems while they do not offer the sport shift function.

Jeez, I'm not usually one to post the "use the search function buddy" kindof posts ... but this has been discussed over and over. If you want the scoop, read up on Acura's report to the NHSTA of what they found was wrong with the tranny. It has absolutely nothing to do with using the SportShift in fact SportShift probably will save your tranny more often than destroy it.

Read up on the findings here: Link

BTW- Just so you know, both the 3.2 TL (and Type S) and 3.2 CL (and Type S) use the same transmission so you're not safe from transmission problems in either case.

Under the 100k warranty if you get your tranny replaced or if its already been replaced once, the chances of the tranny going again are much less because Honda made some changes to the tranny to fix the problem. However with that said there's still a chance of the tranny breaking after its been replaced and most likely the tranny will eventually break due to this design flaw.

The A-spec is only available in Canada, I believe (someone correct me if I am wrong), but has same tranny.... The tranny has a problem in the 3rd gear from what I hear.... How is one supposed to use the tiptronic, or better phrased, how do you use it correctly????

so lets say you do get the tranny replaced do they replace it wit a brand new tranny? or say if you have a engine wit 60,000 miles they find a tranny wit 60,000 or wit 0 miles.. how does it work
please educate me...

The tranny that they replace it with is usually a remanufactured tranny. In the event that there are no available reman. trannies then its possible for you to get a new one, although I don't know if Honda makes new ones anymore.

I couldn't say how many miles were on the replacement tranny, generally speaking though the remanufactured trannies should be as good as new, so you could kindof liken it to have virtually no miles on it.

so what do you do when you sell your car in the future... it reads lets say at 70k tranny fails you get a new one 0miles on tranny.. then you drive the car for 30k more total 100k on the car and 30k on the tranny what is the value of the car then?

too much math involved, but I am sure there is a calculus equation that will find the price...

The value of the car would be whatever kelley blue book values the car at when the car has 100k miles on it. The car value doesn't really change because its got a brand new transmission in it. You could use it as a selling point possibly, but some people might take it as a negative.

i'd think people would take it as a possitive, one problem less (unless they did there hw with the tranny) either way i'd doubt someone like that would look for a TL over 100k no matter the price

heres an idea, sry if it is a repost bec i didnt read all the posts(in a rush), but just use the free new tranny until 100k then get a high performance aftermarket transmission. its just an idea, i have no clue about the aftermarket tranny market, but some company should make a good tranny that doesnt have to be replaced ever(or a long ass time)
