Well I recently purchased a 1999 TL with 176,000 miles and it's been running great. I love the car and it's at 182,000 miles now. I'd buy it again without hesitation.

But a big factor is going to be how well the car has been maintained. For my TL, the car had been very well maintained and the seller had all of the service records.

Another thing to consider is a potential transmission failure. While the four speed transmission in the 1999 TL is generally more reliable than the 5 speed variant used in the 2000-2003 TL models, it still has less than average reliability.

The original transmission on my TL failed at ~173,000 miles but they can go out sooner. And a replacement transmission can run between $3,000 and $5,000.

Ask if the 99 TL that you're considering is still running the original transmission. If so, you might have an expensive repair coming in the not too distant future. You might be better off spending a bit more up front to get a lower mileage car.

One of the reasons I felt comfortable buying a TL with so many miles is that it had a new transmission installed by Acura along with a two year unlimited mileage warrranty. I would not have bought the car if it was still running its original transmission. (At least not at the price I paid.)

If you have a decent mechanic, it might not be a bad idea to have him (or her) check the car out before you commit to buying it. Run a CarFax report and ask if the car has ever been in an accident or had major mechanical probelms.

Good luck!

Bob

Hell, most Honda 4-spds can be rebuilt for $2500 or less. I wouldn't pay that much for a reman. unit.

I have about 250,000 miles without complaint. Tranny replaced at 230,000 but I'm not complaining. Very reliable. The only maintenace I do is change the oil every 3000 miles or so. I drive like I stole too.

Did the original transmission make it to 230,000 miles? What year TL do you have?

99 and yes it made it to the 230,000 mark. I am pretty sure I changed the tranny oil once. I'll never do that again.

115k, runs perfect! Tranny shifts into gear slower (Park to D5) than it used to (at say 50k), but it shifts fine otherwise. Some odd shaking once in a while, as if a vibration that can be felt throughout the car, but this only happens maybe for 30 seconds every month. Great car! And my tranny WAS NOT replaced.

This is encouraging news with many folks over 100 and even 200K. I got a new tranny installed at around 45K. Supposedly its the new updated version with wider tranny fluid channels to keep it running cooler and smoother gear components, according to the dealer. The car is running great now!!

Wow. What a nightmare. Sorry to see that happen. Hopefully you have insurance coverage.

Did they pull all of that stuff while it was in place? Or did they move it?

Where was it parked?

Did it have an alarm?

Are you going to rebuild it or throw in the towel?

the car was in my underground garage...

I have clifford 3.5 with all the damn sensors...and back up siren.
(i rent a spot a block away from my house) so basically, who ever did this job, knew exactyl what they were doing.

full-insurance...

and yeah, after all my mods and hard work, I Give Up....

still left on the car: body kit, h&r sport drop, 18" hyderak rims, engine lol, seats, steering wheel, a few windows, back/trunk was untouched...except my 2" 12 eclipse subs and amp.....they even took my Optima Battery....and my short ram intake..lol..idiots.

Yeah....life is beautiful (my 2nd car this happens too)

124k miles and the only problem has been the oxygen sensor!

Why would you replace a tranny for $5k when the car is worth only $5k?

getting close to 110K miles and still runs strong. This is a good car regardless of tranny issues. I have no complaints, but I'll be selling her soon, though. It was a great run, but it is time to move on.

My tranny was never replaced (130K+), the oil jet kit was added...

I just did regular maintenance...if you see your transmission fluid is black...well...time to do a flush... I just did it, my fluid is pink too bad, the car wont move. lol.

I would only buy a used car with such mileage as you are stating from a driver like myself...someone who really took care of the car, and you know that for sure....how would you know? take it to mechanic with long experience...once he pops the hood, and hears the engine, he can tell you....also, interior of the car will also tell you how the car was treated....mine was exactly as I bought it...no rips, no tears..like new... All I know japs cars last and last.....

good luck and enjoy which ever car you go with.

me myself, im doing something unthinkable! going with infiniti
(yes i know, treason? lol)
