how often do you change your oil?
this may be a silly question, but im curious how often everyone changes the oil in their 2g's? i change mine every 3,000 (works out to about 1,860 miles) and had the trans oil changed twice in the last 15,000 km with honda synthetic trans fluid. i bought the car in the summer with 118,000 km on it, it now has 133,000.

WAY too often, IMO. You could probably go three or four times as long without an oil change. A lot of money down the drain, man.
As far as transmission, with these cars you can never be too safe.

i thought someone would comment about the cost, well i dont pay for the oil, i change it myself at work. i work for a toyota dealer. and the guy that owns the toyota dealer also owns the acura dealer next door so i get employee discounts there too. all i do is pay $5.00 for the honda filter every oil change.

Nice madnesss! I usually wait 6-8k for mine. I go to walmart and purchase the Mobil-1 and have a stock pile of Acura filters. I've gotten cheaper so I'm going to wait til the oil light comes on. As far as the tranny oil, I haven't even put any in or anything.

In reality, you can follow your little maintenance reminder light with this car with no problems or detrimental side effects to the engine.

the only issue with OPs overuse of the facilty = is the amount of waste oil going into the system for no good reason
at least get decent lifespan out of it before adding hazmat to the earth
if you are track driving the car or drag racing or auto-x,,I will agree with more frequent oil changes
agree with at least 3qts atf every year!!

so that maintenance required light is for oil changes? i never knew that. ive always changed the oil in all of my vehicles (ive owned 18, most of them hondas, and 3 motorcycles) every 3,000 km. i love my TL, if i ever do buy another car, i will still keep the TL

It depends on the type of oil and driving conditions. obviously the better oil lasts longer but i usually baby my cars and change them every 3-5k because i know i drive my cars in some bad conditions and have been known to drive it hard.

Three Wheelin'
I have about 320,000 miles experience with the Acura 3.2 engine, two of them. I used only synthetic and changed the oil and filter every 8K miles. Zero issues.

madness and other noobs to diy oil change on the TL:
you reset the mait req light using the trip reset buttons, see diy section
It ONLY records miles- doesnt know oil condition or any other mait items
Then it starts to blink at startup around 6500-7000 miles from reset.
seems to get more insistant in its blinking at startup as you approach change time
at 7500 it goes on solid,,,,
while the wife is driving on the freeway at midnight,,
she dutifully stops and looks under the car and under the hood for anything odd- then drives home
it only says mait req--not a CEL or anything bad like an icon~ lol

2003 TL-p
1 year or 10-15k miles, what ever is first for me. synthetic either mobil 1 ep, or castrol edge, i have had good experiences with both those brands of oil, preferring mobil 1 ep. our engines dont really care what you put in them, cheapy dino oil or top notch synthetic our engines dont care. 3k oci is such a waste of money and resources, and the dealer is the last place id take advice from.

my advice if running long interval: is use some seafoam- half a can in oil then drive 30 minutes,,or more if you have a few days
change oil and filter with engine warm from 15 minute freeway drive.. so that any sludge in the pan is re-liquified and drains out
that will keep the oil pump inlet screen clean--very important if you want oil pressure~
and the oil gallies-passageways and journals- tiny holes that lube the rod bearings
Get some vtec rpm use so cleaner gets the sliders and actuators good- all that runs on oil pressure changes to operate..
gen3 has issue with sticky sliders so prevent that just in case we have it too

its wise to replace the filter halfway thru long interval
If the filter gets full of crud it goes into `bypass mode`- meaning no oil flows thru it- all dirty oil circulating thru engine, getiing worse and worse with every running of the engine.
5-10 bucks for a filter is cheap insurance

stay on 5w30 ..or super cold winters use 0w20
the small oil passages on the TL work better in cold start on 5
and 30 protects the many parts slamming into each other several thousand times per minute better than 20 at operating temp
the only time the book called for 5-20 was during cafe fuel standard years--not used anymore~

the Mait Req light is only a mileage tracker from reset,,at 7500 miles it goes on solid to say its oil change time,, based on acuras belief and using regular oil

And there is no reason to run a heavier oil in either climate with the TL.

we have a well trusted gen3 ziner in bakersfield ca who runs straight 30 all year,
never gets towards 32F there so no issue

Personally I run 5W-20 as stated on my cap. I have an 02 TL-S. I run Castrol Edge and a Bosch or equivalent high capacity/efficeint filter. I change mine when the maint req'd light comes on.
