how much for the 100,000 mile service?
 

I was just quoted 1300 at the dealer including pulleys and waterpump.

parts included of course.
How much should this cost.
The only reason I would consider the dealer was the recent post regarding position of the pulleys versus the belt.

can I go wrong with attempting to have my backyard mechanic do this for me?

It seems a bit expensive, but certainly not anything absurd. It is a dealership after all. I had my car serviced by a backyard mechanic, and I had no complaints. However, I would recommend you ensure that your PS belt is properly tightened. If it is overtightened (very likely), then it will pull the PS pulley down. This will eventually allow air to enter the system, and you will probably have to replace parts.

Either way, anyone with any Honda/Acura experience should be able to perform a timing belt job just fine. There's even a DIY for it.

what post on pulley position are you referring to?
some 03 had an OE problem but those were done under recall

the 105 service runs 800-1500,,range from private shop to dealer
just the parts run 250-400!

joes tree garage may not be able to remove the big nut with 132 ft lbs torque
or get it back on correct tightness/torque

Just question your mechanic first to see if he has previous Honda experience. Maybe get some references from other Honda owners for which he has done work. Good luck.

I agree- past experience on hondas or better yet a TL-is a must
those guys know about the ps tensioner setting, too tight ruins the pump

To know where the hidden bolts are beats looking at the diy as you go~
and speeds the process greatly

I got mine done for $350.00 by a Certified Acura Master tech out of his private garage...he only did the timing belt and water pump though. If anyone is in the Philadelphia area, pm me and I'll get you his info. I highly recommend him, he's very knowledgeable about these 3rd gens, he owns one himself!

I also recently had him do 2 front rotors, all 4 pads, flush and fill, plugs and oil change last week all for $350....that includes all the parts except the plugs and the oil, I bought them myself.

My usual local shop did the timing belt/water pump service, $900 - incld. alignment & tire rotation

that sounds about right, Got mine done at Mcchurchill acura in tx and cost me 1200 bucks. they even made it sound like a great deal by throwing in a cabin filter (LOL) It just gives me a better piece of mind to know it was done there and i dont have to worry about it for another 100k especially our engines with such close tolerences

I worry on any job done without new tensioners and idler pully
cant expect them to last another 105- is my opinion

I asked my mechanic about the tensioner and he told me that they're hydrolic and that they should go to 200k.

except when the grease runs out or the the bearing gives up~

The price greatly varies depending on where you go. I paid $450 for parts and labor for water pump, timing belt, power steering belt, alternator belt, coolant, NGK Iridium spark plugs, oil seals, idler pully, side engine mount, and installing rear brake pads (I already had the pads so only needed the labor). I purchased the parts online from an Acura dealer and everything ran about $250 and the labor was about $200. All parts were OEM other than the spark plugs. I didn't do the adjusters since my mechanic said he hasn't really ever had a problem on them and he has been working on my family's cars for over 15 years alone. The same service probably would have run about $1500 at the dealership. The best advice is to shop around but make sure the place has experience doing this work on Hondas because it makes a difference.

I'm in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area. It looks like you're in California so it might be a bit of a drive. One of the ways he keeps the labor so low is that he works from home. He used to work full time at another shop and now is in the stage of semi-retirement so he does repair work from home. My family has been going to him for over 15 years and no complaints or problems. I usually buy the parts and have him install them since I can get them cheaper online than he can get at the dealer. I can give you the info for ordering parts if that would help you. Let me know.

every once in a while, honda dealers run timing belt specials for $500, parts included..have to keep an eye out for them though..they don't really advertise it

I got a honda tech to do mine at the dealership for 550 with parts. Belts, pump and pulleys.
