How long have you pushed it?
So, I'm not the kind of guy that pushes the car so long that I'm running on fumes in the tank, but yesterday, after sitting in good ole Atlanta traffic for more than an hour, I filled up my tank - putting in 14.388 gallons of Premium gas.
Som this got me thinking - what's the closest you've ever been to running out of gas while barely making it to the station. I know we've all coasted in a time or two, but who has cut it the closest?

That's got me beat. I've put in over 15 gallons, but never reached 16 - and that's with the needle below empty. I get too nervous to drive it any more.
Maybe one of these days I should put a two gallon container of gas in my trunk and just drive it till it runs out - just to see how low it gets!

Since im 17 I have never once bought a full tank of gas for my TL. My theory is dont keep a lot of money in your wallet you dont have a lot to spend. This theory kills me on gas though becuase I can afford half tanks or so.
Also I have heard that gas tank accuracy wears out over time. Mine seems to be really good but I really dont want to test how long I can go after the light and end up on the side of the road. I know someones car that when that light comes on you have like half a gallon at most and they learned the hard way.
I know on one of my moms old cars we where on a trip and it was a 14 gallon tank and we put in 13.8 galloons. Pulled that one very close becuase there where no gas stations for MILES.

Also If you were to read or search some of our other threads you would see that when the low fuel light comes on there is around 3 gallons left. Not to easy to quickly run out with that much

I have filled up 16.812 before. Long story short as I was headed to the gas station the car just started hesitating about 100 feet before the gas station. I made it.

Wouldn't it be bad for the injectors?

In reality its not that big of an issue unless you run your tank down everytime. A few times will not do any real damage to the pump.

On my previous vehiceles 92 accord and 96 integra. I run them the same to the very bottom. I put over 200k miles on both cars and not a problem. I admit I ran out of gas 3 times total. I had no problems at all. Starts up regularly.

i came close to a complete empty tank twice.....both of them when i was driving to the gas station and my motor kept stalling because it was getting no gas...it was choking.....and one time i parked on the street and my street is slightly slanted and the gas in the tank went to one side and the car wouldnt start untill i put gas in it.

what about crap at the bottom of the tank. maybe the strainer takes care of some of it but its gotta do some harm

Since I have been driving cars, I fill up when the low fuel light comes on. I don't add $5 or $10 at a time either. I always fill it up. You are always going to use gas, and Id rather not be at the gas station more than once a week. The most I've put in my car is $38 worth of premium.

i never let it go under 1/4 of a tank, even if i put 5 bucks worth lol normally just fill it up why bother doing it over n over? why dont people just fill up the tank instead coming to the gas station over and over. i work at chevron and i have seen people put gas worth 80 cents into a v8 ram. that wont even get him into the street.

Well, running low enough on gas to where your engine starts hesitating is bad for your engine in general because it's running in a very lean condition.

Couple of things come to mind as I read this thread:
The gas pump won't be damaged by running dry for short periods of time. Most people figure out that they ran out of gas and would stop cranking their ignition long before damage is done. Remember that at 60 MPH and 20 miles/gallon, the pump is moving only 3 gallons per hour. In the world of pumps, car pumps are small & not particularly stressed. Also, its best to keep your tank more full than more empty so reduce condensation & gas line freezing, a problem in the colder climates.
The injectors are nozzles which are likely not to be damaged as well.
I've just filled my new '07 for the first time. The annoying lamp came on when there were 5 gallons still in the tank.
And for fsttyms1, 220K miles is impressive. All on the same car? What year is your car, what kind of driving do you do, and what kind of problems have you had?

2000 TL, same car, severe driving, Only 5 trannies for problems and 1 ball joint at 215k. Motor would have been good for another 200k easy if i hadnt pulled it out to do a 6 speed conversion
