Question How long has the VTEC been around??

Forgive the ignorance, I've had mustang's all my life...anyway, how long has the VTEC been around, and have they always been in TL's? How about the other hondas, accords/civics etc?

As far as I can recall, back to 1996 at least. The Civic EX had them that year. It all depended on vehicle at that time. Not all hondas had them. Now all do. There is a new iVTEC now. It can vary the value profile instead of switching from one to another. You get better emissions control and a flatter torque curve so there is more at the low end.

Here's some good reading on the technology behind VTEC and iVTEC. Not too much about the history.. but still some good reading: http://www.acura.com/models/types_te...ech&page=index

Some history and good info here too: http://www.hondacityindia.com/see/vt...ult.asp?flag=1

my 94 accord EX has VTEC.
I didnt go to that link yet, but im sure its helpful.
VTEC was originally designed for motorcycles, but it was such a god idea that it made it to cars. Its also reliable.

I think the first VTEC engine for a production car went into the NSX in 91' and extended to the civics, accords, etc a couple years later. But I could be mistaken.
