How I Traded my '01TL/non-navi for an '02TL-S w/ navi

I owe part of my success in making this deal to the people on this site. Here's how it went:

Three different So Cal dealers determined I was upside down $1800 on the buy-out of my ten month old 01 TL lease. The car has 13K miles already.

They all agreed to $31K as a price for the 02TL-S w/Navi.

Got the lease down to 47 months at $405 + tax, $2,000 down (+$1800 to get out of the 01TL). Residual at end of lease will be $18,200. My payment on the 01TL is $435, so I'm going to start paying $30 less for the TL-S with Navi!

So after I deduct the payment I don't have to make this month, the registration I don't have to pay in September, and the fact that if I had paid for the Navi on my 01TL it would have cost $2,000 anyway, and the $900 refund I'm getting for the extended warranty I had purchased on the 01 TL, this deal is essentially costing me $50 more than I should have spent in the last ten months, and my payment is going down by $30 per months. FU@#ING AMAZING!!!!!! I am so excited!

I hope this all helps some of you who are considering doing the same thing.

Thanks for all your help in making this decision!

Does the substantially lower financing cost today, compared to last year, contribute to savings on '02 TL w/navi?

Good for you.

But why didn't you wait for the 6 speed to come out? I will strongly consider trading in my TL for a manual TL-S when it comes out.

I would have absolutely no interest in driving a manual transmission sedan in Los Angeles. It would be ridiculous on the freeways, and in the city. I drove stick for my first twelve years of driving. Some day I'd like to have a pre-owned NSX in the garage...that would be a manual tranni!

Yes, it actually is cheaper for me to lease the 02 TL-S w/navi than it was to lease my 01 TL. However, were it not for the fact that I've already leased three vehicles through American Honda, my monthly payment would have been about $30-35 more. So, I think for most people looking to do what I did it might just be a lateral move into a much better car, with a navi!

A lot of it has to do with the timing of your deal. The money factor changes pretty often, as do bank incentives. And you've got to have the best credit possible to qualify for the best deal possible.

Question

I wonder if I would be able to do the same thing, except that I bought / financing my '01 TL. I am not quite sure how I would be able to do this without getting screwed on the price. Anyone have any ideas?

It was a lot less of a hassle than I thought it would be. The main reason is that I was so prepared in terms of knowing what the best possible deal was...all I needed was for them to agree.

Actually I'm betting his interest is the same since the feds have been cutting long term rates not short term rates so it would apply to home loans but not CC or auto loans and other short term loans.

I see, I guess it's all about personal preference.
You do realize I live in LA as well. I usually put about 100 miles/day round trip. So I know about the traffic jams. But I am willing to deal with the hassle of having have to shift in the traffic.

Of course the real problem with your question is that the TL will not offer a Manual Tranny.

Didn't realize you live in LA, but I agree that everyone has their own ideals. For one thing, I can't imagine using a cellular phone while driving a stick...I can hardly handle sport shift when I'm on the phone. Anyway, I'm stoked!!!!

Question

Congrats..Sounds like a good deal, but I've got questions! I've been thinking of duing the same thing as u, but I want 2 know..
how long was ur orginal lease LENGTH of payments? 10 months is REAL quick to ONLY be upside down $1,800.00? What did they GIVE u for the car? No charges for mileage? It had to be a short amount of payments, b/c of residual, payoff, etc. PM me if u don't want to show the "dirty laundry" Thanks

Did you already do your trade? What did you do with your CL-S rims? If you've still got it, I'll swap you my TL rims for your CL-S rims.

I don't mind at all. The original lease was 36 months, they gave me 23K and the payoff was $24,800, so I was upside down $1800. No charges for miles...it's pretty easy to get out of a high mileage lease without penalties, I guess. The residual on the 01 was $18,500.

I was pretty surprized how easy it was to make this deal happen. Plus, I had the identical offer from three different So Cal dealers....I'm still somewhat shocked at how painless it was.

If its OK with the Used Car Manager at Keyes, its cool with me. The new car should be arriving tomorrow or Thursday.
