How far can we go on the "orange gas light"??

I am always shocked when I fill up after the orange light has been on for a while and it take less than 15 Gallons to fill up. Has anybody experimented to see how far we can go on the orange light?

i filled 16.8 gallons once. I went 75 miles after the light went on.

Just remember, when the needle is TOTTALY on "E", you still got 40ish miles of reserve in there somewhere. just dont take turns hard; Honda = floating gas tank

funny you should make this post. my light came on yesterday, i filled up 14.7 gallons.

then I read somewhere we have a 17 + gallon tank.

I hate filling up, so at least now I now it's a premature-e-gauge-alator.

i would imagine what he means (the gist of it anyhow) is that if we take a hard turn, what little gas is left in the tank will move to the side away from the fuel pump intake causing the car to shut down.

im not sure on the definition of a "floating tank" though. am i right or wrong here Darkshear?

The manual tells you that the gas tank holds 17.17 gallons.

If I drive conservatively when the light goes on I get a reliable
50 miles out of reserve. I don't think taking a hrd turn would kill
you (unless is was a very long hard one) but when near the very
end of the reserve you probably want to avoid steep hills.

I once backed up my old 87 Camry onto a steep incline at a bridge and stalled it out because I was nearly outta fuel. I had to coast it down to flat and level to get it to start again to move it 100 feet to a fuel pump!

the fuel pumps aren't always that accurate, how do you when is a real "full tank" unless if you fill it till it spills out....

Yes that's the volume of the gas tank, it's not really how much fuel it can hold. It doesn't mean you can fill 17.17 Gallons of octane. When you fill up, the most you'll get is about 15-16 gallons, even if your car died (fuel cutoff). That because the fuel system needs a vapor pocket to function properly (thats why you need to make sure the gas cap is on tight).

This topic has been beat to death........but, I might as well add to it.

If you notice the gas light comes on very early, at about two hash marks before the empty mark. Each mark is about 20-30 miles worth of gas, depending on how you drive.

On top of that you still have about 2.2 - 2.8 gallons left in the tank when you get to the empty mark. So once the gas light turns on you should be able to get 60-90 miles until running completely out of gas.

i was running on fumes... 16.2 gallons top off from well below E mark. unless i'm wrong, don't think it is possible to fill 17 gallons.

The most I have gotten is 60 miles, you have about 3 gallons left, so depending on how your driving, that could be anywhere from 60 to 80 miles. I am kinda an aggresive driver so I get the low end....

I was recently on a long trip and was getting over 32mpg. My light came on at 445 and I filled at 485. I took 15 gallons even (putting about $0.20 in after the first shutoff). So if I had a little over 2 gallons left, @32mpg you could theoretically get over 100.

I wouldn't have the guts to do it though.
