how to entertain your friend coming to NYC
A friend of mine is visiting NYC for the first time. She'll be here from 11:30am to 9pm. So far I only plan to take her to Peter Luger's steak house for lunch and Jeckyl&Hydes for dinner. What should we do in between? Sorry if this belongs to the OT forum, i need quick responses to plan ahead. Thanks!

I've never cared for Jekyll/Hyde's, it's more show than anything else -- sort of like eating in the middle of a DisneyWorld animatronic theme ride (including the long wait on a line with gaggling tourists). The food is expensive and terrible, about the caliber of a TGI Friday's at more than double the cost.
If you're near to Luger's why not take her there for dinner? Or are you starting out in Brooklyn and ending up in Manhattan for logistical reasons? Are you driving or taking the train around town?
If the weather is nice (it's supposed to be on Sunday) I would suggest some or all of the following activities for a brief first visit to NYC:
- park in Brooklyn Heights area, walk across Brooklyn Bridge
- Take uptown 6 train to 33rd St., visit observation deck of ESB
- Take uptown N/R train to 5th Ave., visit Central Park Zoo (good way to see a bit of the park, with the horse carriages and all, and it's a nice small zoo)
- Or if your friend likes art, take the 4/5/6 train to 86th St. and visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art
If you end up by the Museum by dinnertime, there's a nice French restaurant nearby with a $30 prix fixe on weekdays called Le Refuge (though it gets expensive on weekends).
Or just go to the Carnegie Deli for dinner for a NY "experience" thing!

i'm coming out from bay ridge brooklyn to pick her up at Port Authority where all those buses arrive, then head for Peter Luger's for lunch (I was thinking of dinner there instead but since she gotta go back at 9pm i figure we'll depart around 42nd st to see the neon city lights at the Marriott Marquise, where the floor spins around inside the building before she heads back to Port Authority) She likes meat, so she'll love Peter Lugers.
As for Jecky&Hydes, yeah, their food is not great and the price for it is not worth it, just mainly for the entertainment. aehheaeh i didn't know there was a zoo in Central Park! She loves video games, so i plan to take her to ESPN zone on 42nd, and there's a video game land next to the Sony threatre on 42nd and 8th Ave. Shoot some pool? Too bad she gotta leave so early or else we'll hit some clubs.
Going to the observation deck on top of Empire state is a good idea but tomorrow's weather doesn't look good as of now. So wtf do we NYC ppl do on Saturday afternoons?

Well since you're going to be wandering around the city, how about talking a walk in Central Park, checking out the museums, shopping on Madison Ave, getting some matinee tickets for a Broadway play, showing her the tourist traps (Empire State, Statue of Liberty, etc.), hitting a cafe, seeing an Imax movie in Lincoln Square, and the list goes on. . .

Hey, has Luger's opened up a branch in Manhattan, or are you seriously going to pick her up at the Port Authority, schlep out to Williamsburg in Brooklyn, and back into the city for the rest of the afternoon/evening?!

Broadway play is good, but i've already saw Phantom of the Opera 3x! different girls tho, but since i'm not willing to see anything else because once you've seen the best and compare anything afterwards, it just ruins it, like Lion King, i was not impressed, mostly because i thought it was mainly aimed towards kids and once I compared the 2, conclusion reached! Maybe Riverdance? Rent? Chicago?
Imax idea is Good! and prolly take her to hardrock cafe, and walk around aimlessly like 2 lost bums, ahehaeaeh shiet, i don't know what i'm gonna do with my car, park it? The last 2 times i parked in a garage, i saw the dude bumping left and right with customer's cars, i'm like wtf, i ain't ever parking there again! Damn, maybe i shouldn't install the Alpine system, now i'm more cautious wherever i go with my baby, lol.

Miles sounds like you pretty much got everything figured out. Theres alot to do around 42nd st area. You never said where your friend is coming in from? Maybe she could come back and stay overnight, there are great clubs in the city.

Your friend is from CT and she's never been to NYC? How old is she, 12?
You might do better to go to a steakhouse in midtown -- there's tons of them, many of them quite famous (Palm, Sparks, Ben Benson's to name a few, though I wasn't impressed with Gallagher's). The idea of driving from Times Square to Williamsburg and then back is pretty horrifying, however nice your ride is...

A- Never known too many women who fancy steakhouses, perhaps haute / nuvelle cuisine instead? Ya don't really expect the lady to order a rare porterhouse now...
B- Geez, if she's never been to the City does it really matter where you guys go?!? Just go to a Kosher deli for lunch and hit the latest and greatest fusion place for dinner.

I say take her to Po in the village. It was the best meal I had while in the city. Jekyll/Hyde (sp) sucked ass. Not romantic in the least. A real dissapointment to me. I say that it is important for you guys to just wander aimlessly. There is so much to see in the city. Eventually, you guys will stumble onto something cool. She may want to shop too. In that case, you guys will really be in luck.
