How do you take the shift plate off?

I want to use the paint thinner to get that chrome shine out of my shift plate? How do you take the shift plate off? What type of paint thinner should I use?

Napsoner,
You can only do this on the '99 TL, with the 4 speed tranny.

First, the plastic ring around the shift gate has to come off. Its a small bevel piece surrounding the shift gate, matched the color of the dash. Just use a small tool and pull it up.

Once that is off, the shift gate is removeable by 4 tabs, 2 on the left side wall, 2 on the right. its not hard to get them off, just try not to push too hard on the tabs with your tool of choice.

After that check out this thread about removing the paint.

I know it works for 99s. Which aren't first generation. I'm not sure about 00-01.

its only on the 99TL, not the 00-03. If you want the chrome look jspecinspire.....trade in you 01 for a 99. :p Or you can take your plate to people where they chrome/gold plate stuff. Don't use chrome paint you get from the store tho If you guys need instruction on how to take the shift plate off do a search, if you really need more help I can do a 'taking the shift plate off for dummies' with pics and all but this is a really simple job if you look around and think. Just don't start ripping things off like I wanted to. I'd recommend getting the paint remover that you can dip your plate in, the spray on stuff just didn't work too well for me. goodluck
