How to check noise front end
 

How's it goi guys, I have a 2003 Acura TL. I have been hearing a noise that is coming from either the tires, hub, or something in that area. What first comes to mind is the wheel bearing hub. When the car is driving I hear a noise that is like when there is a big bubble In The tire in that there's a rythmic noise. Sorta goes like woo woo woo hahaha.is there any way to check the hub before installing one?or any suggestions on anything esle it could be? Thank you

A bad wheel hub bearing usually sounds like a constant humming or a woowoowoowoo sound. Tough to explain. If you go on YouTube you can hear clips of a bad one and compare. Depending on mileage and conditions on where you live, wheel bearings are typically the culprit. As long as it's not a clunking sound, it's most likely the wheel bearing. Not that hard to change either. Unfortunately you will need access to a press.

Thanks for the response/help. I have 150,000 miles and I live in New York. I will check out YouTube. I will also add that the woowoowoo noise goes faster as the car goes faster and slowing down vice versa. One more thing to add is that I also have a noise of like a old crown Vic/taxi when going over bumps it makes a noise like the shocks or aomething in the suspension needs to be replaced. Why are common problems for that? I know I have a lot of mileage but I like learning to fix things on my own. Hopefully get a newer tl in the future so it helps to learn as much as I can. How do you diagnosis the suspension system or is it just driving and hearing thru experience? Thank you

Some cars you can tell by jacking up the wheel and feeling for play in the wheel, not so much on the Acura's. I had no play at all and mine were bad. I've only replaced the fronts and have not done the rears yet. 230k. The sound is just like you described and started hearing it at about 35 mph. Not an emergency that you get it fixed right away, but should not wait too long.

That cluck sound when you go over bumps, that is one of the biggest debated topics on here, you can change out everything and still have some clunks.

I just started hearing a whining noise from the right front kind of like noisy recap tires or no inner fender well on the right front. No play at all at 12 and 6 position, but a tiny bit of play at the 9 and 3 position. 2001 cl type s just turned 163k. Replaced struts 10 years ago. Florida car all its life, pretty good roads here. What is the probability that its the wheel bearings?

asb32952, Check the inner and outer tie rods. Check the boots to make sure they are still in good shape, no leakage, etc. etc. Side to side is usually tie rods. Wheel bearings usually have a noise associated with them being bad, humming or low frequency, Also tend to have steering feel a bit loose or vibration type of movement (like a rough idle when driving).

Thanks for the feedback. I forgot to add that the noise starts at about 25 mph.

Is there any vibration when it starts, loss of power, change in rpm, pulling to one side or the other? The OEM bearings (NSK 45BWD07) are good bearings but it is a moving part and they do wear out. Check your axels for damage such leaking near transmission, grease coming out of boots, missing damper. Etc.
Without a sound clip we can't really judge well. Try comparing the noise you hear with some clips off of Youtube. The one below is a good start. let us know how it goes.

+1 on the wheel bearings...additionally if you have worn suspension components or bent wheels; there may also be a chance that the tires are cupped. have you rotated your tires from front to back and observed the noise still?

Michelin tires are less than 2 years old. Had them balanced and rotated a few days ago with no changes.

Yes, it is the bearing.Thinking about going this route with the assembly since I don't have to press any bearings in. They want $400 plus at the local shops for labor.

That wheel hub and bearing won't fit your car. Also I highly recommend that you watch a YouTube video for a front bearing replacement on a 2000-2003 TL. The problem you will have with a preinstalled bearing is that the bearing needs to be installed in the Knuckle not the hub. Even removing the bearing and wheel hub you will need to pound/press out the wheel hub but the outer race of the bearing is still in the knuckle where you will need to remove an 84mm circle clip and then press/pound out the outer race. I am posting the link below for you to look at so you have an idea how this assembly actually goes together. You can do the job without an hydraulic press but you will need something to press in the bearing and knock out the old race. If you reuse the wheel hub you will need to cut off the inner bearing race. Easier to buy a new hub from RA.

The above part says it will fit when I put in my vehicle info with abs. Also sent a message to the seller and they verified. Trying to understand why you say it won't. This video shows a bearing hub replacement on a 2008 mdx. Isn't it similar to the 2g cl/tl?

The model of wheel bearing and hub that you were showing in the link will not fit your 2003 TL. A 2008 MDX is not even close. They are not the same mounting. The video I posted is the correct parts and how they are assembled and mounted. Posted below is the correct part for hub and bearing for a 2003 TL. Obviously your car, your choice, but unless you have the tools or access to them you will have a hard time replacing the front wheel bearing on the 2003 TL .

Apparently the listing was incorrect and it has been removed. I believe this is the correct part.

Sorry about the confusion on your year and model. I apologize, I looked at the first post in this thread and didn't notice it was from someone else in 2017. Not an excuse just the reason why I screwed it up. The main thing is that the part for a 2001 CL and the part for a 2003 TL is the same and wasn't what you had posted. I see the post you made a little earlier today and yes that looks like a part that would fit. I don't know who the mfg is for that part and I would recommend Meotech or TImken but they would be about $20-65 more expensive plus shipping.
The procedure for changing out the hub and bearing are the same as in the YouTube video link I posted above (on 1-30). It is not as easy as the MDX video you posted.
