Question HID Fog Conversion - How To Protect Your Ballasts ?

I was listening to people talk about how HID ballasts for the conversion can be likely to be damaged by water... I started looking into it a little and found this post.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All you need to do is secure the ballast with some strong 2-sided tape or something similar. I used industrial strength adhevise velcro and attached it to the inside of the bumper.

I heard that sometimes it is even better to use waterproof silicon. Just completely cover ballast with silicon. I think thats because ballast is water unsafe and can be damaged if you're going thru a deep water.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have no clue about these types of things, so I'm wondering??? Is this a good idea or do the ballasts heat up? I got the kit... I just want to make sure I do it right

How should we protect our ballasts if there's an issue?

on my bike and the roush i just used 3M double sided tape, the 5lb strenth, its about 1 1/2" wide, and can be found around the paint area. i've never felt them get that warm or anything, still sticking around.

I stuck them on with tie wraps under my stock ballasts... if the stock ones are there i figured the philips one would be fine.

no actually 8000K is less light and more purple... 6000k is really white and then it starts getting shades towards purple the higher the number... 8000K is very subtle shade of it and probably looks pretty cool

I just like the super white look.

stock I believe is 4300K and is the most light output, but it's slightly on a yellower tone only noticeable if you compare side by side to 5300k or 6000k

to be honest I was looking into doing a 6000k upgrade to my low beams and my fog lights but then I thoguth about it, and we already have HID, and honestly I like the 6k look but its almost too tuner'ish for me. Like I'm trying to be somethign that I already am? I donno, I decided to keep stock low beams, and I'm gonna do a 4300k fog kit to match. Should look pretty cool.

It will look pretty cool and with 4300k you'll be able to see the farthest... it's just a diff color that's all...

I don't know what tuner'ish means, but I went with all 6000k's because I like the color and I got all four bulbs at the same time from the same manufacturer so they all match exactly in color : o ) plus, I got a good price on the low beams

I think it's going to cost alot man... are you trying to do the d2r's for the fogs?

d2r = shape/size of bulb and holder fitment although d2s will fit with mod...

my bulbs are 9006 to go in the stock 02 fog assembly

400?! Thats obscene! You can get 4 "cheap" kits for that price, hell the shop around where i live does it for $150 with installation and give you a 1 year warranty. Its on thing those bastards at Honda charge $200 for each ballast, but aftermarket doesn't seem worth it to.

I got my purevision kit which came with the two 6000k bulbs and then purchased 2 purevision 6000k headlight bulbs for under $200... Then I sold my old headlight bulbs to the mechanic that was working on my car for $50

win win

I'm very pleased with the lights and ballasts after almost 2 yrs... not a problem at all and they are an awesome bright white color.

Hey Doc Holiday, three questions. 1) What fog housing are you using? 2) What is your custom front bumper? 3) What is the 3 magic wire mod? Thanks.

no housing... it's fine and the purvision kit is just mounted under the metal bumper and no problems, the bumper cover was an EL Pana (acurazine member) creation... they took a 99-00 bumper and fused it to a 02 bumper.... they are split in half and molded together so I have the fog light holes... and for good measure they molded the front skirt to it as well...

here's my bumper

The 3 magic wires improve the electrical flow (do a search on 3 magic wires)

1) from negative battery terminal to chassis of the car
2) from negative battery terminal to engine block
3) from positive battery terminal to alternator

This was an old pic after I did it with my old battery... now I have my fog wired in lol and an optima yellow top battery...

I have a few more pics, but if you do a search you can find a more detailed description

Thanks : )

The only complaint I have is that the front sits much lower and you have to be very careful on driveways and things...

I would actually like to raise my car about an inch or more if it wouldn't look completely dumb. or at least raise it to where the lowest part of the bumper is where the original was so I don't have to worry about driveways and things.

trust me in saying that YOU WILL SCRAPE IT !
