Help needed on New Tires
Hi! All,
I hit a curb a few days ago and now there is a bubble on one of the tires. The tire technician says it is a tire-wall damage and that it is time for me to change the tire. But I want to go with wider tires, keeping the same rims. So I need some help on this.
What is the widest I can go, without rubbing, on the stock rims? I am not ready to change the rims yet. Is there any advantage for going with wider tires? I was looking at some 225/55/16's. If it is the Brigestone potenza's, they are on special order... so I might have to wait for them. What are my other choices? I want to reduce the road noise from the tires, and also improve the handling.
Any info is appreciated.
Thanks guys

Same thing happened to me recently
I upgraded to P7000 SS 225/55/16 on stock rim
I have to say that they DO MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE, and it's worth it. But here are some of the things that you have to be aware of
1. You might get more noise from your tire depends on the tire that you choose
2. you will feel that your steering is heavier, but I am cool with that and actually like it
3. Your brake is gonna imporve. Because there's more grip the the ABS won't kick in as much
My car is all stock, and the tires don't rub and all that... They are just just great!!!
I say go for it!!!
Or you can choose to upgrade only 2 tires
if you upgrade the 2 at the front, you get less understeer and more likely to have oversteer if you know how to make it happen
Or you can upgrade the 2 at the rear, and you will got MASSIVE AMOUNT of understeer
no matter which tire is bubbled, you can always switch the stock tire rear to front...

The tire and wheels forum has a lot of info.
I also have the 16" factory rims (chrome) but won't change the tires until I need to. When I do, I was thinking about 205's or 215's. I haven't done a lot of research on what size I can go with since I have dropped the car. I think people mentioned Pirelli's (P7000?), Michelin's (XG's) and you mentioned, the Bridgestones

Thanks guys. What is the price on the P7000? Tim, do you stock those tires at acp.com? How about the Bridgestones? Any ideas on that? Does anyone have any other tires?
SL1200MK4, thanks for the reply. How is the road noise from the P7000's? Is it better or worse than the stock one?
Thanks again guys

I was looking at tirerack.com and found the following 225/55/16 tires.:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compar...Bridgestone&ma nufacturer=Dunlop&manufacturer=Pirelli&manufacture r=Yokohama&speed_rating=YR&speed_rating=ZR
There are a couple of Potenzas. which one is the better one? How about t he Dunlops and the Yokohoma? Are they any competetion to the P7000/Potenza's? If yes, which particular one?
Thanks again

Well, I feel that the P7000 SS is more noisy, but when I asked my ex-gf if she can notice it. She said hardly... But even thought if I do get extra noise, it's worth it. Man, the car feels like it's riding on rails on the highway ramp... I couldn't believe that the tires made such difference. I do go to the track so I am REALLY sensitive about the feeling of my steering wheel and my tires. Hope this helps.
