Your correct. No filter on the 99 as it uses only the internal filter. The 00-03 has the external filter.

If you have an external filter, this is the one I buy. Its cheaper than OEM but very well made.

If you have good line pressure then do not even think about replacing the filter by itself. It does not make sense to replace the filter by itself as thats many hours of labor and many things you can screw up.

If you have the transmission apart you might as well do a full rebuild. You can always install an inline filter like a magnefine although I personally do not see any benefits from using one.
