Question Got the Magnaflows & Y-Pipe - Do I need to get the Resonator?

So I got my Magnaflow exhausts (14829) and Y-Pipe (10758) last weekend. Anyways I'm glad I got the exhausts, they look good and sound great. But there are times when I drive that I wish it was a bit more quieter...the exhaust tone is still a bit too loud, especially when cruising on the highway. I mean, I have to crank my volume up a bit more than normal to hear over my exhaust noise. I guess maybe I'm used to the quiet stock exhausts! :P

I still have the stock resonators. My question to you Magnaflow experts: will getting the 22" Magnaflow resonator quieten the exhaust tone down more? Or only a minimal decrease in exhaust tone noise? Cause if it only quietens a little bit, there's no real point in getting it. If it does dampen the noise noticeably, then I'll spring for it. Anyone that knows, please post. Thx in advance.

Patrick did you go cat-back or axle-back? from what i understand you went axle-back cuz you still have your stock resonators..

i have only one resonator (22") on my cat-back setup and it really sounds nice and not too loud at all... i suggest you go cat-back (2.25 or 2.5" piping) and get a 22" resonator!

i have a magna flow catback.
2.25 pipes.
14" resonator.
i get a lot of cabin resonance.
i don't mind it....
it is mostly at the 2.2k to 3.0k range..
can be annoying at NORMAL highway speeds.
my kids hate it.
but they will grow to love the sound.

so you have teh stock 2 resonators in place and its still to loud for you??? maybe you shouldnt have an exhaust system, cause thats what they do is add noise.

that is also why the compthechs are superior! now all you would have to do is purchase the quiet tip inserts!

are you talking to me?.
if you are...i have only the magnaflow 14 inch resonator.
if i did it again...i would get the 18 or 22 inch.
because it is loud inside the cabin..
just in that 2-3k rpm range.

Well I had to replace my oem mufflers, because the bafffle in the right muffler has come loose (I get this rattling sound that is very annoying). I figured, if I'm gonna replace the muffler, might as well go aftermarket, and hence why I picked up the Magnaflows.

Hindsight is always 20/20 (sigh). I wouldn't say the exhaust sound is too loud...more like a little annoying (but it's something that I can live with). Do you know if Magnaflows make quiet tip inserts?

Justin, yeah I just went axle-back instead. But that's the thing: will adding a 22" resonator help to dampen the exhaust tone more? If it does, I'll get it. But if it doesn't dampen the sound, I'll just live with my current setup.

Joseph:

You nail it exactly bang on! It's at the 2.2K to 3K RPM (cruising on the highway at a steady speed) that gets annoying! I'm on the highway all the time (to/from work), so this exhaust tone gets tiresome after awhile, especially if I want to listen to the radio or something.

LOL about the kids...I hope my kid will like it too!

Weird. Between about 2,000 and 3,500 rpm, I can hear the exhaust inside the car, almost to the point of being irritating...almost.

i can hear that, but not loud at all, but not even as loud as the BMW 330ci

my frd has a C320 and swapped the mufflers, the tone is much deeper than mine

When i first put on my magnaflows i could only hear it on quicker accelerations between 2k-3k rpm. I believe the stock resonator is the quietest you'll be able to get it.

I have an 18" magnaflow muffler/resonator in place of the stock one and its much louder. If you want it a little quieter, I'd suggest getting a 14" and welding that onto ur exhaust pipe between the stock resonator and cat.

thats why you remove resonators

nope, but ill tell you too thats why comptech is better. on the weekends you can make it louder and on trips and workdays you can put in the quiet tip inserts and quiet it down!

Interesting...so get the 14" magnaflow resonator and keep the stock resonator. Sounds like a good solution. Quick question tho: would a 22" resonator be better or no? And if I add this resonator (either 14" or 22") and still keep my stock resonator, will I notice a decrease in HP (or increase in TQ) due to increased restriction?
