I basically removed that buffering box under the filter box behind the bumper and made it so air just goes straight into the filter box..... can this be harmful, is there a chance that water or any other foriegn objects can be sucked up into the intake?

more air will get sucked up. i think that huge black box in the bumper is meant for sound deadening and large objects enterin the air intake , that thing is huge. i think you can use it like that but keep in mind you might have to keep replacing the air filter more frequently and/or removing the air filter and tapping off whatever is stuck to it.

I believe it's called the resonator and removing it allows a little better airflow (although it won't help much at all). However, there is no downside either; The resonator just reduces noise.

From my experience with installing the AEM Cold Air Intake, the resonator is very restrictive, Like Rice said, it will help only a little, but if you replaced the stock air filter with maybe a K&N and removed the resonator, it will help way more...
