Gas Mileage Question

I had a full tank and now have 71 miles on the tank. I am using 93 Octane. The needle is three lines from the middle. Should it be so far down already? Where are your's at 71 miles? Still near Full, 1/4 used, mid point?

I just bought the car on Friday.

Thanks

I get around 350-400 KM per half a tank in my 99....yours should not be that much off. I use Esso 91 Octane.

Yes, thats very bad.

At 71 miles, you should barely be budging the needle. The halfway mark should be at around 150 to 225 miles depending on your speed and traffic.

i dont know if this is the info you needed but,

(miles driven on full tank)/(# of gallons in tank) = miles per gallon

the big question is what kind of driving is that? all city? lots of ideling? ac on? lots of stop and go? a mix of hwy and city? all hwy? there are all sorts of reasons it should be there and lots of reasons it shouldnt.

to calculate MPG just take the amount of fuel (gallons) it took to fill the tank back up and divide it by your miles on that tank.

Firstly, I wouldn't worry about gas mileage based on one reading. Every car sending unit (that is one in gas tank) calibrated within some tolerances. In my car it stays on "full" longer, than drops like a rock. You need to learn your car.

Secondly, to calculate gas mileage fill in your gas tank all the way to the top, reset odometer reading to “zero”, drive whatever miles you want, fill in gas tank to the top (prefer to use the same gas station/pump, so the pump shuts off at about same level) and check how many gallons of gas you just filled in. Divide number of miles driven between fill-ups on gallons, and you got your gas mileage. Longer you go between fill-ups, more accurate your calculations are.

Dont worry about that reading, its basically impossible you burned so much fuel so fast...you're saying you got like 2-3miles per gallon... i think that not even nascars use this much fuel. Fillup again and start counting again...if you get the same result i recomend you sell that car NOW!!!

heh US should feel like the foregn country in thisone, i think its just US and England who use the imperial system rather thatn the metric which is used by the other 98% of the countries...not to mention universally used by chemists, physisissisisits, engineers, canadians and who else...??

I filled up

and it ended up taking almost 5 gallons. So I got around 16 mpg pure City driving. I guess my meter just moves fast.

16 mpg! A bit low but not too terrible. Should be around 19-20 mpg, depending on how you drive. Check your tire pressure, air filter, the usual suspects....

The needle on my gauge tends to move quickly from full to 1/2...typically around 120-130 miles. From 1/2 to empty it slows way down. I average about 23 mpg and usually fill up at ~350miles total (normaly about 15 gals to fill it up).

Thank you, that is more the question I was looking to get answered. That is what I was trying to figure out.

Thanks

I get about 325 to 350 to a tank on highways (cruise control), about 225 in the city(could be just b/c of how i drive)...not sure what mpg that is...my needle goes down too quick also, around 50 it drops to 3 bars below full, but then it moves slow from there.

I got 240miles on a full tank of V-power and I don't think it's normal. is 93 high octane is the only one that could be used on a v-tech engine?

Wow... I get 25 mpg or better on my '97 with its short gearing (4th gear in my car is between 3rd and 4th in a 2000+ TL)

My folks have a 2003 TL and get 33 mpg on long trips using regular.

I go to NYC alot, and a full tank of gas gets me aroun 350 to 400 miles, now consider this that I-95 is not a straight highway, specially throu CT. On top of that its busy as hell allmost all the time. All highway driving would get you from 325 to 375, safe bet, and city i get around 225-250 on a full tank ov gas.

this past weekend i pushed 32 miles a gallon. all highway over a 215 mile trip. and i was doing 75-85 the whole way. i was very pleased. now i have to try and beat my personal best :P

i have found though that if you're doing 80 you're pretty much in the sweet spot. 85, not so much. any other thoughts on this?

normally though i get about 200 miles from half a tank (seems to be the average). overall i get between 350-380 a tank. i try not to let the low gas light come on either. a good friend of mine had a 2002 type S when they came out in late 2001 and he swears he went about 40 miles with the gas light on. i'm not so daring though. the farthest i went was 10 miles.

That's about exactly what I get. A bit less if I'm just doing short hops.
