Furthest road trip driven in YOUR TL

Im debating to rent a truck, and take everything from my apartment and tow my car from NJ to TX this summer, or sell everything and drive my car to TX. It sucks, but itll be more than 75% of a price difference. How far have you guys driven your TL without stopping? Any road trips done? Need your personal experiences to help me make this terrifying decision.

thanks!

No problems at all. I got close to 28 mpg in the '97 TL, 4 mpg higher than the EPA says it should get. I got 33 mpg in the '03 TL if i remember correctly.

Both are comfortable roadtrip cars. Add an iPod or satellite radio and you're good to go.

MD to Seattle, Seattle to Mass, MD to NorCal, NorCal to MD

wouldn't want to do it again, in the TL as i have it now, anyway

the mileage you save coming down hills you lose getting up them but it was about 280 in gas, this was back when gas was still in the 2.50s-2.80s

would you guys recommend hauling a small trailer, or is that pushing my luck? Debating that or adding a roof rack and throwing on a cargo holder.

get a real size u-haul truck with a car carrier dolly that lifts the front wheels off the ground
Take everything with you and anything you might want--its probably cheaper where you are now than rebuying stuff new or used~ and what will you get for the stuff you sell and the hassle..keep it--your crap is stuff!!

Some uhauls may fit a TL inside--they often show up at the racetrack with a car in them~
Thats safe transportation!
There are plenty of ziners along the way to meet, maybe get a free night on the couch or park in their driveway and camp on the lawn

Take sports drink sized bottles for extended driving range- rest stops are few and far between when you need it most and its Illegal to relieve yourself on the side of the road--labeled a sex offender for public urination!
Stay hydrated with plain water,, and new and old fave tunes are very important

NOTE: get pics of everything you own and get special insurance from your homeowner-renter policy for it being in transit--all loss covered,,uhauls get ripped off all the time too

Dont pack the car full and start over in life unless that your goal- to start fresh

In the small plane, where its an hour from a place to take a leak when cruising at 10,000 feet, we call a 16oz jug the Human Element Range Extender or HERE bottle

The TL mileage will be that of a Uhaul with a roof rack and a truck rack or bike rack type device on the rear
Kills all sense of aero to the car, and iirc, towing is not ok'd for gen2 can but it stresses the trans on a known weak system

Check a few rental companies and ask if they need any Relocations on the size truck you need
When they need trucks in a certain area, even if that is 200 miles from your destination...they give a major price break (otherwise they must pay their own drivers to do it and fly them back)

I have driven across country twice driving a truck or car for a place- all I paid was gas

also check with your tax preparer-
there used to be a big writeoff/deduction on moving expenses for work- to find work, and the daily distance driven to the new employer vs the old job was a factor. strange- ask a a pro about it

alot of great advice. I was thinking about getting a penske truck (better rates) but factoring the rental, and gas would shoot me over 2 grand. I have a small apartment, so I dont have many things. Just about everything I bought was bought used because moving here was temp, so I dont have a big problem letting the furniture go. It was ALOT cheaper moving here than moving back. My brain is about to explode

Tom,

I piss on the side of the road a lot and didn't know it was a problem. I got to watch out for this.

Denver to Memphis a couple times and Minneapolis to Denver..trips range between 1000-1600 miles. TL's are solid highway cars and I find that a small pillow sitting on top of the armrest makes things very nice...i also put a small pillow on the left side so that my arm rests on the pillow as I drive with my left hand at 7-8 oclock position of steering wheel...

I love the 32 mpg I get as well, usually gid mid 400's in mileage per tank

Well if the furniture isnt an issue and any of your smaller stuff you really want to keep is easily shipped by truck company, you drive the TL and enjoy a nice trip- stop and enjoy rest areas and scenic vistas...keep the clutter off the roof, it just encourages someone to break in and will kill the fuel mileage--the shipping cost will offset the fuel for the car

Its not much $$ to send yourself a pallet of things you really want to keep -if needed
Check the furniture prices in texas- plenty of stores have websites

talk to your accountant-tax person- on the total benefit of having moving expenses in your situation- if moving for work.
If school,, that may be a deduction too? any tax Experts??
I dont know if that is still a valid thing-- but years ago it helped me!!

Give the TL a seafoam treatment- set the tires a few psi higher-change the oil -check cabin air filter, engine air filter,,
bring road trip snacks and have a great time
Moving to tx in the summer is not fun anyway- so the TL will beat a rental truck for sure
Some find a small angled pillow for more cushion on the seat is helpful- and use the lumbar support
Disclaimer: My use of the name uhual was intended to be generic and not meant to promote or suggest any 1 company

rob- yes its illegal to use the side of the road as a urinal
Havent you ever watched COPS? some drunk guy always wants to go use the bushes and the cop says- Then I would HAVE to arrest you
Sexual Deviant charges- Exposure- Public Urination---If anyone calls and reports you- oh man- maybe their kids saw your whingdingaling
You may have to register as a sex offender! not live within 2000 feet of schools...
Im not kidding.
Same goes for a little roadside or rest stop recreation with your love interest~!~
Dont go to reno/anywhere in Nevada and get frisky anywhere!!!! Car in motion or not -ahem-
know someone it happened to- married couple spicing things up got more than they bargained for,,not bothering anyone or visable to public but cop knew if the truck was a rocking,,, inside the camper shell was too~
back on topic
You ever see yellow filled drink bottles on the roadside/median, or if you stop at the truck brake check areas (good place to get out and stretch), a bunch of them will be there littering the edge.
Its a Hazmat situation no less- all the user has to do is empty them at rest stops and its no big deal- but left filled- volunteers and state workers cant touch them- call in a specialist!!
Hiway cleanup crews call them Trucker Bombs because sometimes they are lobbed out the window when full

Be safe- dont use the 911 box to call home if stuck in traffic or ask for directions or movie times either dededeee

"I wanna talk to SAMPSON, Fly me to the moon and back!" That was a far trip and not sure of mileage, 250,000+? As I came back, slipping tranny and check engine light on, not getting past 2nd gear... Out of warranty, go figure

If you tow your TL, I would put rockblocker on your fogs and put blue 3m painter's tape all over the front end.

I drove from SD to SC, so like 650 miles? with an assload of shit in my car :P my rear looked like it was dropped a couple inches... went through 7 CD's packed with my itunes Top Rated songs lol... and I have to do the reverse in June, then the same in September...unless i work in norcal for the summer. someone hook me up with a job in santa cruz or san jose related to cars lol! hehe...

well yeah get/make a lot of cd's or have your ipod... and pack your car with food and drinks so you only have to stop for gas and bathrooms.
