fuel pressure regulator and pcm - hard starts

hey guys... i recently took a trip to sacramento in my 2000 tl and everything went fine... after a few days of driving around i noticed while xmas shopping and going into a store for 30 mins n coming back out and cranking up the car it would immediately turn back off and on the second start up have a rough idle like a misfire... my mechanic inspected it and found all the symptoms of the tsb 01-001 on the fuel pressure regulator and pcm... called the dealer and got a price quote for both and the fpr was quoted @ 400 and the pcm was 1250.. does anybody have any experience or problems in this area. the bulletin said tht if one was changed then the otherhas to be changed too.. is this true can i get away with jus changing the fpr and getting rid of the rough idle it feels disgusting and dont wanna damage the engine?

the updated regulator comes as a kit with the pcm so i think if you just change the regulator you'll be putting in the same one you took out. i would check with acura to see if they can give you a better price on the install or maybe even goodwill it. most private shops wont be able to do this kind of job because the key has to be coded to the new PCM.

this one is worth having acura diagnose for you-

How are the spark plugs, have you run fuel system cleaner like seafoam
what about cleaning the EGR ports in the intake manifold
If you have over 60kmiles all of those should be inspected and done as needed

unless your guy ran the car with a fuel pressure guage hooked up inline- thats just a guess based on codes?

yea my mechanic did use the fuel pressure gauge to test it and check it out.... although not %100 sure its the most probable cause and thats what he came up with... the problems seem pretty on the mark with the tsb as well...

the spark plugs were changed no more than 1k miles ago (i originally thought this was the problem)

i do use a complete fuel injector system cleaner about every 5-6k miles but no seafoam

and i myself or a mechanic have NEVER cleaned the "egr ports" or the intake manifold... can a dealer do this for me? will they know what im talking about if i ask them to do this? im no where near being a grease monkey so dont really plan on doing this myself

see the DIY for thermoblock install/EGR cleaning- 2 hours instead of $500 the dealer wants
The 6 egr ports built into the intake plug with carbon easily and screw up idle performance
Did you install NGK Iridium spark plugs - other may burn out suddenly!!

wow 500 sounds like a rip off too... maybe i can get my mechanic to help me out with tht 1 for less than $100 im sure he would... the spark plugs put in were also the oem ones so those should still be fine... although he showed me a few of the coils with very minor minor tears he said they would still perform normally and used some sort of paste when he put them back on could this cause a misfire as well? i know coils are pricey so i dont really have the money to replace them at the moment....? and ideas or suggestions?

tears in the coil will give u a misfire because they are arcing on tube it sits in. id replace those. the paste he put is probably dielectric grease that shouldnt cause a misfire. id try:
1. Seafoam Treatment
2. Replacing Cracked Coils
3. Hoping the first 2 work so you can avoid goin to the dealer lol

coils are 50 bucks each and you replace the ones that are bad- not all 6 of them as some techs will say
Go with the coils first- that will cause massive running problems

then after its running better seafoam the gas and intake manifold- bad coils will load the pistons with crud

Clean EGR ports 1.5 hour DIY, 2 hours if you dont own a solvent tank for parts cleaning and have to use 3 cans of carb cleaner to get the ports clear
DIY has instuctions for your tech to use

YAY! Finally fixez this freakin problem with the CEL and SRS LIGHT! first and foremost thanks to everyone with their suggestions and posts. and also might i add that keyes acura in van nuys CA suck and try to rape your wallet for repairs that dont need to be done! Fixed my hard starts by simply replacing the main O2 sensor along with a bad evap canister and shut valve. as for the srs light claimed to be the opds unit and sensor by keyes acura the light was reset and not a single problem was found with it by my honda tech by the way robertson honda is the shit in north hollywood! no more rough idles or hard starts for me but all this came at the expense of $600 later. sorry for such the late reply but itis finally fixed now. hope this might help out others somehow or someway lol now on to the modding. got my atlp exhaust installed now waiting for the mail man to bring my xlr8 spacer and aem V2!

well i figured out the srs light problem. i always buckle up and obey the law. but according to my dash board and a little red light they say im not buckled up when i clearly am! no problem this is a free lifetime warranty fix according to acura. so i guess i just might have to return to keys for one more thing. i mean its free right!!! but thats the last thing for now til i see tranny problems in the future. i mean i just cant afford the free cup of coffee and cookies from the dealership anymore!
