Hi guys,
Our car use 9006 bulb for the fog light.
I am in the process of converting this bulb into super white LED bulb. What I have done is take this blub and removed the class tube and take the bulb's plastic connector to be used on my LED circuit. I know there are 9006 LED bulb out there on the market but mine is VERY BRIGHT super white light. As a matter fact the light output is 5x whiter than our HID low beam! The secret is that I was able to get high power 8mm super cool white LED from a Korean manufacturer. I used 5 LEDs for each bulb and each LED is rated at 80mA (compare to standard white 5mm LED which is rated at 20mA). I don't have any pictures to show you yet but as soon as I put everything together I will post them for you. I can't wait to see the final installation!

wow hamony, that is REALLY cool! are you going to be producing them and selling them? that would be great! be sure to get some pictures of the beam pattern and how much they actually light up the road.

This is just a quick proto type. The final version will be a lot brighter because I will use five high power 8mm super cool white LEDs for each foglight. And the best part is
you don't to do any modification to the foglight housing at all! Just remove the 9006 bulb and replace white this one becuase I am using the same connector.

Why would you want to have yellow foglight when you can have
cool white that is much whiter in color temperature than our low beam HID headlight for a fraction of the cost of a new HID kit. If you are interested I will make them available for $25 for each bulb. This is a direct replacement of the existing foglight bulb 9006 on the TL.

I will show you the picture of the final installation comparing between our HID, regular 9006 bulb and my bulb. The LED bulb will not as bright as our HID but if you looking at them directly you see that my LED bulb produce a LOT whiter in color temperature than our HID. It look almost icy blue light!

LED is 95% energy efficient and thus is very little head is being produce. In other word LED does not generate enough heat to burn your hand when you hold it while it's on.

Are you going to put a resistor to prevent hyperblinking...

The problem with LEDs are that they emit such a low wattage that it makes our cars think that the light has gone out and it blinks 10x faster than normal.

the foglights dont blink though so they wont hyper blink. that only happens to turn signals. :P

Illumination depends on the way the reflector (mirror) part of the lamp is designed. It will illuminate the road alright, but the fogs are designed to give a wide "flood" beam so you would see the lower part of your path brighter than usual.

AcuraTLS03 is correct. LED will not blink when it is used for the foglight because it uses 14.4V power supply directly from the battery.

I think you are right. When you look directly at the LED from a distance it is so bright and the light output look almost icy blue.
However, as you pointed it out it does not illuminate the raod well. I think the reason
for that is white light does not reflect well on dark sureface. Lets see after I put everything together and test it out.

Yes the illumination will depend on the reflector, but in the case of LEDS, it WILL not illuminate the road well.


As in the case of this mod, the reflector has not changed, so the only difference is that he replaced the regular bulb with LEDS. The LEDS's will look cool, but it WILL NOT illuminate the road well.


try it yourself. Get a led flashlight and a regular flashlight see which light beam travels farther ?

$25 each. I used very expensive high power 8mm cool white LED and I used five of these LEDs per blub.
There are a lot of white LED bulbs based on standard 5mm LED but they are not even come close comparing to high power 8mm LED. Each high power 8mm LED is four to five times brighter than
a standard 5mm LED.

Five 8mm LED per bulb = twenty 5mm LEDs per bulb.

So it's now the case of either looking cool and just give off a lot of glare or getting useful lighting. As the dillemma of many a ricers out there. They want to look like an HID-equipped car but they really can't see the road.

Can't you somehow angle the LED bulbs sideways so the reflector lens throws the brighter light back out?

I tried that already and not much light is reflected back. The maximum number of 8mm LEDs I can mount on a circuit board is five. Any more than five I can't insert through the back hole of the reflector because it is getting to big. Those pictures that you saw were taken with three LEDs. I will take more pictures with five LEDs mounted.

Yes, that is true. I am doing for the look. I have seen cars with white LEDs installed on them they look like a tiny stars which personally I don't like it at all. My LED bulb have higher power light output and it does not look like a tiny stars.

how about a reflector around the end of the led's? ive seen some headlights that have those around the bulb to help them use the housing to reflect the light better, if i remember right my dads caddy has them

Isn't a LED supposed to be a concentrated light pattern so it doesn't spread out well and that's why you don't get alot of the road lit up. This has to do with the rounded tip of the LED. So if you flatten out the tip with a sander or a dremel the light pattern will be dissapated and might reflect better. Have you tried this?

Correct. The only way make the LED spread the light beam at a wider angle is to cut the rounded tip of the LED; however there are two majors drawback. The first one is that you will lose about 40% of the light output intensity and the second drawback is that the LED's life is reduced by 50% because now you have less clear expozy to protect semiconductor.

Here are the reasons why I want to make my own 9006 white LED bulb for the foglight:

1. The 9006 hologen bulb has short life. I bought the SilverStar 9006 bulbs and after three months one of them blow out and a month and half later the other blown out also. I don't want to keep spending $50 to replace my foglight every 6 months.

2. There isn't any 9006 blub anywhere that will match the OEM HID low beam.

3. I was able to find high power 8mm cool white (8000K) LED that that have 50 degrees of viewing angle.

Just arrived!!
I just received 125 pcs of 8mm white LEDs from South Korea!!
These are special LED and you can not find them anywhere else in the states.
