First impressions Garmin 2610 vs Megallin 700
I was setting out to get a GPS unit for my car. I got a little excited with the two touch screen based models out there. I did want something that looks acceptably nice..... (realistically i did not expect it to look/work as nice as the factory unit). I basically bought both the Garmin 2610 and the Megallan 700 units. Had them for the last ten days and here are my impressions. Sorry this is a little long.
Garmin 2610
Great unit. very accurate, very nice and comprehensive database of points of interest. Configurable interface. I did lose the tracking a few times on the Florida turnpike. I liked the interface, it always seemed to give me information i wanted...nothing more nothing less. On the downside, there was no nice place to mount it in the Acura dash. a previous thread suggested using the CD tray, and that was the best place. The problem was that when i used the touch screen i would end up pressing buttons in the back. Also it covered the temp display. The speakers worked loud enough, no problems there. The remote is useful. I could mount the unit far from me and just mount the remote closer to the arm rest.
Megallan 700
Good unit. Whole US map loaded. The database was lacking. When i wanted to go to the closest Target Store, it told me to take a trip to Massachusetts (i live in S-Florida 2mi from a Target store). I lost tracking all the time. It could be a bad unit i was stuck with. But the unit did look good. The vent mount actually looked decent. The touch screen locked on me a once (reboot fixed it). Nicer screen....did not smudge easy as the garmin unit, also it was slightly bigger and looked cleaner. Interface was good but I liked the Garmin unit interface better. More expensive ~$1400 vs $1100 (incl taxes). The voice prompts were nicer than garmin....not that garmin was bad...this was just nicer.
Bottom line.
Though the Megallan looked prettier, i am going to pick the Garmin...functionally i found it much better. I would recommend the external antenna. Because i had a GPS...i relied on it completely, so when it did lose the satelite....Holy crap...i was lost !!!

Good point.
The only thing with getting stuff like this online is that u need to be careful with the return policy.
Actually, www.gpsonsale.com has the one of the better rates i could find. Also they seem to have all the accessories as well so its all in one place.
