Any answer on the lack of the warmer on an odyssey trans yet and what to do with the lines from the odyssey trans and also the coolant lines that used to run to the warmer?

 

Just bought a used 03 and it has the issue. To those that have tried this DIY. If you are doing this in you home garage - can you drop the trans out the bottom or do you need to remove the hood / hoist to get the trans out of the car?

sooo I've had a week with the AV6, so far so good. I changed the warmer but kept the filter, swapped a few sensors and the top 2 in one solenoids and the one in front of the transmission from the tl tranny to the AV6. Apparently it needed roughly 6 bottles of honda DW1 ATF. i got a check engine light a few days ago but haven't been able to pull it, i also had my airbag replaced so hopefully its nothing too bad. everything works fine and shifts better than what i can remember. Any suggestions on what else to do to preserve the AV6 ???
On a side note, THANKSSS for everyone keeping this alive and giving so much feed back so i could get this done.

 

You can pull it out of the drivers wheel well. I think that's what most people do. There's a video on youtube of a guy doing it (2 videos) - I think he has a blue TL-S.

 

Yes, you can remove/install the trans if you jack up the front end high enough.

Here's a tip, I bought a mover's dolly from Harbor Freight for about $8 and made this tranny jack adapter. It helps stabilized the tranny on the jack for removal and installation. Plus, with the tranny off the car, I used it to roll the heavy tranny around to swap parts etc:

Ok, fully extending the jacks. Just wondering, did you jack up back end as well. Mover's dolly. That is a good tip.

One last question, what did you do with the old tranny? Take it to a rebuilder as a gift or the dump?

 

No, I didn't jack up the back. I returned the old tranny back to the parts place (LKQ) and got my core charge refunded.

I've had this swap since my transmission took a dump on me ~15000 miles ago. Very happy with the results but has anyone every taken this av6, j32a2 combo to a dyno? Ive done a few small bolt on upgrades (intake, and headers) and I'm curious if I will see more of a gain with this transmission? I know that the stock transmission eats up a ton of power between the crank and the wheels and I just wanted to know if that's the case with the av6 as well? If it matters I have an 06 "baya" transmission. Thanks!

 

The AV6 has the Type-S gear ratios so if you had the Premium model you'll notice a difference in the range of gears. But that's all I know.

 

Sorry to restate the obvious, but as stated in the first post, so long as its the 06-07 v6 3.0 Accord I am good to go part wise?

Sorry that I could not have searched more (time crunch today). Any other gaskets or parts I should get ordered for this swap?

Due to the time needed, I am going to go for the AV6 over a 6 - speed as I only have 2 weeks to do this...

 

Yes. You need a trans from an '06 or '07 Accord V6 coupe or sedan.

Change your rear main seal while the trans is out and I also recommend changing the axle seals as well as the trans input shaft seal and torque converter o-ring. You will also need a new gasket for the filter adapter housing where it bolts to the transmission.

You reuse the TL axles.

You use the AV6 torque converter. If the miles on the trans are on the high side, it may be a good idea to get a new one.

 

Thanks again! The transmission is basically ready to drop after today's work. Just waiting for another engineering buddy to be in town to have an extra set of eyes and hands to help out with the final drop.

Yep, I too replaced all mounts with the cheapies ($120/set). Dealer quoted $250 or so just for the front, so I figured why not try this. I definitely have significantly more vibration at idle now, due to the cheap ones not actually having the pneumatic functionality the OEM mounts have (even though they do have the pneumatic fitting).

 

I realize this is really old but I didn't see it answered, just in case it helps anybody:

My Odyssey service manual lists the BGRA transmission for both the 2005 and 2006. Serial # for 2005 is 7000001- and 2006 is 8000001-.

 

Hello, I have located an 2006 / 2007 AV6 - i think?! The yard dogs are telling me so - how can I find out how to decode the transmission serial number to ensure? Would a Honda dealer be able to tell me how to do this?

 

Never mind, found another thread it needs to have BAYA printed on the serial number

 

A trick I learned when putting it together:

Only put the flex plate to torque converter bolts in fingertip tight. You need to be able to move the TC independent of the flex plate via the starter hole to line up all 8 bolts.

 

WOW. With the AV6 swap this car is completely different. It has the shift quality of a new car!

 

did you do the swap yourself? I didn't read up all the pages of this thread. I am looking to pick up a 2g TL possibly with a messed up tranny and doing this as a project so it's ready for when my wife is good to drive

 

Yes: get a hoist and have a friend around when you detach it from the car for safety...

 

hoist to lift the engine out a little to angle it to reach the bolts on the tranny?

The way VDo did it seems "easy" enough to remove it.

people are kind of unreasonable around here. Stock TL with a blown tranny, asking 3500$. I have to be an a**hole and offer like 1000$ for this to be worth it at all

 

Hah, yeah IMO you shouldn't pay much more than $1000 if you have to deal with the hassle of replacing the tranny (preferably, much less). I don't know what they're smoking.

 

Put the engine on a bunch of solid wood, lower it down with the hoist. There are two lifting eyes already installed on the transmission from the factory. Lift the new one back up. It is 1000x easier than using a floor or transmission jack. Also easy for lifting the replacement trans off the back of the pickup...

 

with even a cheap harbour freight (princess auto in Canada), it makes your life sooooooo easy. i got mine on sale for 150$.

 

sweet that's perfect. I found some transmissions already, low KM and from 500-900$, all in Alberta. Now I am browsing for a good candidate TL. I don't wanna get some beat up peace of crap and put time and money into fixing it. My co-worker has a 2003 type s which is immaculate, but tranny is still good. I am talking him into getting a new car when the tranny goes so I can get his TL haha

 

Could you explain the process in more detail? Why put the engine on wood? I'm assuming you're talking about just lifting the transmission out the top and leaving the engine? Or pulling both together?

I followed this exactly. It's all in the service manual as well. It's the best thing you can have, explains it step by step.

 

 

Oooh OK I misunderstood, I thought you were talking about hoisting the trans out the top. You're saying to use a lift to lower the engine & transmission out the bottom with the subframe as the service manual says? Or do that first then lift the trans out the top?

I'll check out the vids when I have some time later.

 

The service manual shows a procedure similar to what is shown in the videos. The engine stays in the car and is supported with a jack from underneath or attached to an engine brace from above. The front subframe gets removed and the transmission comes out from the bottom.

The guy in the video chose to remove the lower control arms. The service manual says to separate the lower ball joints and leave the control arms attached to the rear subframe.

 

OK got it, I had remembered wrong from looking at the service manual a while ago. I am trying to get the process clear in my head as I'm sure I'll be needing to do it before too long.

 

Anyone sell their broken transmission to a rebuilder?
How much did you get for it vs. scrap value?

 

Sometimes people will give me their transmission but thats when they are buying one I already rebuilt. So its pretty much like a core for me.

I cant imagine I would pay more than 75 bucks for one outright. A yard around here wont even give 100 bucks for a whole car since scrap is so low.

I think I'm about to pull the trigger on an 05 Odyssey transmission. My '02 TL-P supposedly has a Jasper rebuilt tranny that "neutrals" after a few miles of driving, and am interested in the AV6 swap. On the Odyssey, I keep running into an option for the Touring model, what is different about that transmission compared to an LX? Thanks for any info.
