Exterior engine cleaning
How do you guys actually perform this task, what I mean was to just clean the surface of engine and any surrouding area to get rid of oily contaminant or dust. Do you just hose it or take the car to get steam cleaned.

Not a Blowhole
DO NOT STEAM CLEAN!
You run the risk of damage to delicate electronic parts, flushing protective gels out of weather pack connections, etc.
Your engine does not leak, and should not need that level fo blasting. Not unless some Afghans used it as a toilet.
Use dish detergent like Dawn or Ajax. Mix it and apply carefully or spray on. Use a bery light mist to hose it down, just enough to get the cleaner to run off. Start the engine, run the A/C so the fans blow.
In between cleaning, a detailing spray works fine, leaves an anti-static coating, and will not go wehere you do not want it. I use Meguar's #34 or Einmann-Fabrik's "Pearl" detailing spray, available from Classic Motoring Accesories.
