I've been using an 8500 for over 2 years now....wouldn't make any highway venture without it. I've picked up cops in rural areas about a mile to a mile and a half away. Saved my ass a bunch of times. Just my $.02

Same here. Just got homenow and on my way home with a 1 mile stretch of freeway commute and picked up a cop using Ka band. Got off the freeway b4 I passed him but I figure he was about 1/2-1.5 miles in front of me.

Good Radar Detector. Never leave home without it.

wouldn't leave home without the 8500. The question is
the zr-3. Is it effective? More and more cops in Oregon
are using lazor or ladar. Am curious if it is effetive at
its job. The way the cops use ladar its too late by the
time any detector picks it up.

Sallies...this is what I got off of www.radartest.com

Escort Shifter ZR3 ($449.95 suggested retail)

The Escort Shifter ZR3 uses the control/display module, sans a few features, from their high-end remote detectors and we found it to be the class of the field. Audio alert volume can quickly be adjusted using the simple thumbwheel control that also is used for power on/off chores. Better yet, the ZR3 can be linked to Escort's superb Passport 8500 detector using one thin cord with telephone-style connectors at each end. Once coupled together, the 8500's text display will spell out warnings of laser attacks and also tell you when it's doing its laser-shifting routine. Of the units tested, we found this to be by far the most elegant way of conveying information.

The ZR3 proved to be quite adept at confusing lasers, achieving a remarkable 99 percent efficiency rating against the five guns. In fact, had it not missed our 450-foot threshold by a scant two feet against the LTI Ultralyte LR gun, it would have scored a perfect 100 percent, the best jamming ability we've ever witnessed. If you want better protection against lasers, most likely you'll have to buy a judge.

Hope that helps.

Take a look at the Blinder series, They seem to be about the same as far as warnings go! The units are cheaper.

yea with batteries the power is minamized and as they get less and less powerfull, the lesser range. i would use the cord (get the smart cord if it will work on he S2. the 8500 is better overall but the S2 is a good unit
