Dying interior another color

i have tan interior and want black. i would swap if anyone is interested, but that may be more of a hassle for some.

i want to know what in the car is possible to dye, and would come out decent.

and if possible to dye, how would you go about dying it?

thanks in advance.

FL3.2TL 09-22-2007 09:50 AM

Honestly no.. If you really want a black interior, try looking in the options of suede, because you don't have to replace no parts. Dying, well I wouldn't do.

fsttyms1 09-22-2007 12:34 PM

I wouldnt do it. I would look into salvage yards and stuff for stuff like the dash and seats and door panels etc...

Lo Pan 09-27-2007 07:53 PM

im reading online you can dye your leather

anyone know how hard it is or has tried it?

S1CK TypeS 09-27-2007 08:27 PM

there was a dude on the CL side that had red interior if i remember

tientruong 09-27-2007 08:29 PM

I wouldn't try it, if you want, bring it to a shop and do it professionally if anything.

dnd2984 09-27-2007 08:50 PM

Get it redone by a custom car shop dont dye it.

Rajca 09-27-2007 09:21 PM

thanks for email.

anyone think itll be hard to match the plastic stuff with spray paint? like fuse panels/pillars

t0ast 09-28-2007 04:32 PM

With all this work to swap it in and out, you might consider trading in your TL for another one with the black interior. then you can get an upgrade on the mileage, etc.

spray paint will not get the right texture, and it would smell for awhile.

Lo Pan 09-28-2007 08:46 PM

i just saw plastic spray paint made by krylon ill test it somewhere.

i would trade it, only thing is, its more of a hassle really.

dnd2984 09-28-2007 08:48 PM

use Duplicolor paint if u are going to do the dash. The Duplicolor paint will work on the dash, and panels.

Lo Pan 09-28-2007 08:48 PM

wats the name of this type of material

its material the top of the dash is made of, and the door panel, and door panel arm rest.

the firm plush things

dnd2984 09-28-2007 09:00 PM

i would classify the dash as vinyl. Go to Duplicolors sight and look at the videos of them painting the interior. ALso custom shops use duplicolor piant as well for interior parts.

Goodluck. just remember prepping the surface is the most important step

Lo Pan 09-28-2007 09:32 PM

thanks for all your help so far dnd. didnt know bout duplicolor interior yet. whats the name of the product, and have you seen the finish product first hand?

also, i found this http://www.bryndana.com/features.html

it says you just straight up paint it on surfaces. its authorized by Ford and bunch of companies

im so glad i looked around, saved me couple hundreds

im go buy some and practice on my moms avalon first =p shhhh

evantec 09-28-2007 09:53 PM

If you look elsewhere, there's someone who swapped the tan carpeting for black. I think the materials (carpeting) were a few hundred $ (I forgot if it was $180 or $300), and the time-needed was about 6 hours. It sounds like he had to take apart everything in the interior to lay down the new carpet, and it might take someone less skilled even more time (12 hrs?).

As for the seats, could you go to a junkyard and try to buy new ones in black? Same thing for the headliner and package shelf.

I would NOT suggest dying or spray-painting anything -- what happens when the paint fades? Or what if the ink comes off the first time you get in the car wet because it's raining. Finally, doing anything with a lot of chemicals is going to get a lot of fumes in the car, and you don't want anything which could fog the windows (or get on the windows accidentally). :ugh:

You might be better off trading your car for another with the black interior -- if black wasn't offered your year, it might have been for a different year. (For instance, Royal Blue Pearl did not come with a black interior for 2006, it does now in 2008.)

Would you think about black seat covers instead?

Short term, you could go to a dept store and buy a few black towels and cover everything, to see how a black interior might look. It's cheap enough, and if you don't like it you didn't do any damage. :2cents:

Lo Pan 09-28-2007 10:07 PM

i felt etchy at first, but it seems creditable. worth a try.

heres a video from duplicolor

Here's the thread from the guy who swapped the camel/parchment carpeting to gray/black:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152962

There are pics and it looks great. Maybe you don't need to do the seats...

Lo Pan 09-30-2007 11:26 PM

so far i did some of the step panels and the seatbelt panel

im was so ecstatic, and glad i found interior/vinyl paint.

the quality is like OEM like and its so easy, no preparation needed. i used the duplicolor for now since thats what i found in the stores. ill order some colorbond to see the quality of it on something harder, like leather, but its twice as much =/

i went to a dealership to check out an interior of another black car and you wouldnt even knew i painted it unless i told you

i guess i might post some pics up or maybe even a DIY later on.

thanks for everything so far guys!!!

fsttyms1 10-01-2007 08:30 AM

I hope by you saying no preparation needed, you thoroughly cleaned the panels you sprayed before doing so. Good luck with this stuff lasting on the materials that flex. Also if you go to AUTO PAINTS stores (not auto parts) they have interior dye for carpet materials/headliners. I WOULD NOT attempt to dye or spray the seats. You wont be able to do it. Find them in black and buy them.

Wait please define no prep needed. YOu still have to remove all wax and protectants on all panels before painting. Leaves the seats Tan, leaves the leather on the doors tan. and paint rest of it dark. Change the carpet and rugs to black also.

Lo Pan 10-01-2007 07:19 PM

dnd2984 10-01-2007 09:02 PM

:pics: i need to see this... Was i right about duplicolor

Lo Pan 10-01-2007 10:42 PM

yea thanks dnd, i guess im use dc all the way. i was etchy since they didn't state anything about leather, they just said seats. well it works great on leather. doesn't crack

but yes, this thread is worthless for now =p tommorow. im still high from fumes.

+1 I want to see how the panels came out too. I was thinking about doing some accent pieces in my interior to black as well as the carpet. Keep us updated

dnd2984 10-02-2007 07:54 AM

How long did the seats take. Does it still feel like leather?

Lo Pan 10-02-2007 11:00 AM

ive barely dont 1/4 of the car. ive done the leather on the door lining tho. it doesnt crack and still has flex to it. tad bit on the courser side for now but ill find something to soften it up.

if you ask me, this is a real small price to pay for something of this magnitude. ill upload pics after school.

dnd2984 10-02-2007 11:38 AM

How are u going to do the dash. Tape the windshield or take the whole dash out

The_R1Ky_Kid 10-02-2007 12:08 PM

I cant wait to see this, but theres no way it could last for years of abuse. It can easily get up to 150 degrees in your car and nothing will last through that without chipping or cracking in time. After time you realize theres nothing that compares to oem...... :rtfm:

6MTUA5 10-02-2007 11:44 PM

Here's the front and back seats for sale in black
Here's the center console in black

Lo Pan 10-03-2007 12:31 AM

everything is out of car, except the driver seat and dash.

fsstymes1, would you care to chime in. seeing youve taken it off before with your 6speed swap. thanks

endurance? im not sure of. but its a real small price to pay for me. if you love black interior, and dont have $1000+ this is for you.

in the meantime, im taking it to tint shop to get all tints removed, waiting on shipment of VIP curtains and woodgrain interior as well as the wood grain steering wheel.

Lo Pan 10-03-2007 01:19 AM

k im finally done, here it is

dnd2984 10-03-2007 08:05 AM
